Guest
Wanted to let my chickens out supervised in the garden today(I do need to get some electric fencing at some stage) but are they likely to charge off into the distance??or do you find they will stay close by?? I have visions of losing them over the hedges and going off into the fields over the hills and far away(slight exageration ok) Any advice as I would like to let them out for a while to have a roam
feemcg
In my experience they don't go far. I have a landing net but have only ever had to use it for nervy big chicks. If they have a favourite treat a handful thrown in the run will always get them in quick. You can also sort of round them up, keeping well back and moving slowly. tara
Mine really do wander of into the hedges and at times l cant see them all a pat on the leg and calling girls they all come running tho
Patricia W
Mine stayed close for a long time. Now they are exploring, but stay within the fences - even though they could fly over if they wanted to. Every time I go into the garden they come running as they expect treats. They don't get them each time, but infrequently, just to encourage them to keep coming. Ain't Nobody Here
Mine never go far although they used to always head out of the garden into the driveway, for some reason . Now they're contained behind Omlet netting and never make any efforts to get over/under it .
ted
much the same. mine stayed very close to run for days then started to get more adventurous. Always come back for treats...
tania
Mine don't go that far either and we live in the middle of farmland so they could go for miles. They tend to hang out under bushes or on the compost heap. They seem to have good homing equipment in-built.
