Yet more fruit/veg questions!

Recommended Posts

Sorry, guys, I have more questions .

I'm going to get straight to the point rather than rambling on, as I don't have much time right now. Any help would be much appreciated.

1. I'm going to have a crack at growing peas this year. They have been in the ground (from seed) for 12 days now and I can't see anything shooting yet, should I be worried?

2. When you grow peas, what do you do with the actual pods? Can you eat them? Or can I give them to the chooks?

3. I've read that when the peas start to grow, you are supposed to 'pinch' them? What is this and how do you do it?

4. I'm also growing potatoes this year. I read that 'main crop' potatoes won't do well in large pots and prefer to be in the ground, is this correct?

5. I also read that you have to change where you grow your potatoes every year so you don't get diseases/pests forming. Is this true?

6. I want to have a go at growing my own lemon, orange and lime trees, can you use the pips from the actual fruit (from the supermarket) to grow a tree? If so, how do I dry them out?

Many thanks for any help.

1. I'm going to have a crack at growing peas this year. They have been in the ground (from seed) for 12 days now and I can't see anything shooting yet, should I be worried? It might still be a little cold for them maybe? I have started mine in modules in the greenhouse but they still take a while to show so you may be ok, problem is they quite often get dug up by mice when they are outside

2. When you grow peas, what do you do with the actual pods? Can you eat them? Or can I give them to the chooks? I don't think you can eat them - chooks seem like the best bet

3. I've read that when the peas start to grow, you are supposed to 'pinch' them? What is this and how do you do it? No idea but you do need to pinch out some flowering plants and this entails taking out the leading shoot (pinch it between finger and thumb back to a point where shoots go out horizontally) this makes the plant bushier but I am not sure if peas need the same treatment

4. I'm also growing potatoes this year. I read that 'main crop' potatoes won't do well in large pots and prefer to be in the ground, is this correct? Oh I know this! Miss! Miss! I know this *puts hand up and waves it* thats right they don't do well in containers!

5. I also read that you have to change where you grow your potatoes every year so you don't get diseases/pests forming. Is this true? sorry no idea :(

6. I want to have a go at growing my own lemon, orange and lime trees, can you use the pips from the actual fruit (from the supermarket) to grow a tree? If so, how do I dry them out? I would have thought that a spell on kitchen roll on a windowsill would be your best bet (not you, the seed :D )

Many thanks for any help.

Nope. They have thick seed coats and can take a while to come up. So long as you water them they should be making an appearance soon.

2. When you grow peas, what do you do with the actual pods? Can you eat them? Or can I give them to the chooks?

I've never bothered eating them, or making pea-pod wine....

3. I've read that when the peas start to grow, you are supposed to 'pinch' them? What is this and how do you do it?

Pinching them is when you pinch off the top part of the plant to encourage them to grow nice and bushy, and produce more flowers. Personally, I do this with peas as well as sweet peas... but it looks like am in a minority

4. I'm also growing potatoes this year. I read that 'main crop' potatoes won't do well in large pots and prefer to be in the ground, is this correct?

They like lots of space as they're bigger than earlies, and they stay in for longer, so if you had a truely enormous pot you could, but personally I don't think there's much point.

5. I also read that you have to change where you grow your potatoes every year so you don't get diseases/pests forming. Is this true?

Yes... and no. I have a tiny plot so I can't really do very accurate crop rotation: I make the effort with brassicas, onions, and potatoes, but not anything else. If you have the space, definitely better to avoid planting the same "familly" if veg in the same area each year. Legumes (peas are one) can fix nitrogen in teh air to their root nodules, so when they're done you have lovely nitrogen-rich soil. So worth putting somethign that likes nitrogen in that spot next year.

6. I want to have a go at growing my own lemon, orange and lime trees, can you use the pips from the actual fruit (from the supermarket) to grow a tree? If so, how do I dry them out?

You will be wating a LONG time, and the fruit may not be very true-to-type. I would be more inclined to buy a plant instead.

Many thanks for any help.
