A nasty cut...

Recommended Posts

Hi all

A few days ago I heard my Miss Pepperpot squawking and saw my Gingernut chasing her. I stomped up to the run with a 'what's going on here' and saw the Gingernut had blood on her beak and the Pepperpot had her tail down and her back to the wall.

Loofi (Miss Pepperpot) has been fairly thoroughly plucked underneath for quite some time now, but it hasn't bothered her. Now however, she has a 'hole' a bit smaller than a 5p about an inch below her vent. I separated her from the others, but still let them out together - they ignore each other when they're scratching around the garden.

I put her back in the main run this afternoon, but she was only there for a couple of hours before the squawking started again and the wound, which was nicely scabbed over and healing, was reopened.

She's back in solitary confinement again, in a dog training cage in the utility room (with a make-shift nesting box and roosting bars) and seems happy enough (she's our live-in composter now), but I was wondering if I'll ever be able to put her back with the others full time or will they always go for her as she looks different? :(

Thanks everyone

Have you tried gentian violet spray? This is purple spray which disguises the redness of the cut which attracts the others to peck again. It's also a mild antiseptic (I think), so won't do any harm. Failing that, you can get bumper bits for the others to stop them pecking her. I guess any reintroduction will come slowly and you can see how things go from there?
