Start on left and you are going to turn the first piece slightly to left to make it square again and repeat with the ones next to it. Repeat with next and butt it up to the first continue across and you will see windmills appearing. Click on this picture to see video of it. Plum Posted April 28, 2009 Author Share Posted April 28, 2009 (edited) Yup Step 5 You now sew it back together again and I know you will be disapointed but you don't have to cut it up again. Use 1/4" seams and you can ease any that don't match as it's cut on the bias. Sew it in a grid line by line like you did before. n.b. take care when pressing because the seams are on the bias and will stretch. So press don't iron. i.e. place iron on fabric rather than smoothing it. and try not to undo seams cos it makes it worse. Bet Snowy's class don't get much done they'll be seeing what she's up to and bet a few have a go. I'll do some more pictures for you. What are yours looking like? Emma.x Emma stoppit go and get that sewing machine out and cut some bits off the bottom of your curtains and your OH's shirts and get that grid sewn up. When you get mixed up we'll help. So good for marking quilting lines etc. Don't worry about your corners too much it adds character to your work and you can always embellish over any obvious bits that niggle you. I love the way your stripes are still going the same way I thought they would be going all ways. My chicken wire fabric is still going same way which I am really chuffed about. Here is a picture of the batik one rearranged. and Isobels one sewn together and a Christmas version better get on with mine. Bet you've overtaken me now. Don't worry just cut between where they overlap. I did and it's turned out ok. If you are really bothered cut a bit off all sides of the template and mark it again, but it'll work fine if you do the above. Sally's overlapped as well and she carried on ok. Emma.x What I did when I first started was to make a square template from card (use a cereal box) and drew round it onto the fabric which made the right size squares. You can then draw your seamlines 1/4" in to sew along or cut out another square 4" big and use that to draw your seamlines. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I'm going to do a thin black border then a patterned fabric for the outside border. I'll post some pictures of finished quilts tomorrow and next instructions. We had a very eventful evening Halfway to patchwork class the car decided to die on me - I turned it around and just about made it home again So my friend and I held an inpromptu patchwork evening at my house instead. But it meant I couldn't get the extra fabric I wanted so I had to use what I already had. I thought it was looking OK - lovely bright, chickeny prints, right? WRONG!!! Busy chickeny prints do NOT make good windmills And I'm going to call this one "Headless Chickens" But I love the effect, very clever. I also need some black now for the borders. I still have a couple of seams which are slightly adrift, but all in all I'm quite pleased Thank you Plum for getting us this far, I thought you were going away...cheeky minx suggesting I can take over as Emma's mentor!!! Poor love will get all of a dither with me helping her....actually Em, it's not that difficult once you get going, it's just taking the first leap into cutting & stitching and then cutting again (gulp ). My machine has lines etched on the sewing plate which you can line your stitching up with...I did do that, but I don't think I started off with the needle in the right place I'll know better if I ever do this again!! Having seen Snowy's and bigmommasally's lovely ones, I'm quite glad I did it in plain colours, it was easier to make sure I had the pieces in the right place without patterny distractions. Snowy where do you get your lovely chook fabrics? I have a new camera on the way (well won & paid for on ebay!) so hopefully I'll be able to post some pics soon I await with bated breath, the next instalment of instructions......
