*mummy_hen*
I want to invest in a holiday home for my girls, but am hoping to offer a hen sitting service in my area also and would also be happy to hire it out to begin with whilst not in use, although the tempation of an empty house may be too much!! Basically i don't know whether to just get an eglu and run or whether to spend that little bit more and invest in a cube. My girls are used to having a nice WIR at home, so a cube would be more like a home from home. I thought it was also be an appeal to others leaving their chickens that they will have the space that a cube and cube run has to offer. Howver i am not convinced you could easily hire out a cube like with an eglu. Basically, i wanted opinons at to the pros and cons of both, and whether you think i should just bite the bullet and pay the extra for a cube or whether you think an eglu will be sufficient?!! chelsea
Everyone probably already knows my answer... I would go for the eglu everytime. Sleek, compact, easily transportable in the car, and no matter who you hire it out to - it will fit in their garden. The cube is big, gappy & cumbersome IMO. Redwing
I would say Eglu too if you want to hire it out, less moving parts to get broken on set up and dismantling
*mummy_hen*
Thank you for the opinions so far. It will predominantly be the holiday home for the girls and any chicks holidaying here, but hiring out eould also be an option i would consider. TAJ
Given you have 5 an Eglu could be a bit on the small side - but the eglu is far easier to take somewhere - without a van that fits it made up a cube is not so portable. Tracy
Guest
I have only had my cube one week and I certainly cant imagine taking it somewhere..too big to be moving around I would think!..even if it had no wheels on its a substantial piece of housing good luck indie
*mummy_hen*
I only have 4 girls now so there should be plently of room in the house as they snuggle up. The run won't be that spacious but they will be free rangin still whilst using it.
Egluntyne
Much as I love my cube, I wouldn't want to be dismantling it on a regular basis. I'd go for an Eglu with a run extension.
TAJ
I only have 4 girls now so there should be plently of room in the house as they snuggle up. The run won't be that spacious but they will be free rangin still whilst using it. Sorry - I had forgotten that. I would then say go for the Eglu, it is easy to transport. As to run size, apart from the height the floor space on a standard run Eglu/Cube are practically identical and again both with 1 extension are the same floor area in the run. I double checked my calulations with Omlet and they confirmed this. Whilst the cube is 2m the skirt is 20cm each end so it is 1.6m long inside the run. The Eglu, whilst narrower is 2m long inside the run - so just a different shape. For a holiday home Eglu has to be the best choice. I have both now if you want to come and look at them side by side, plus some lovely baby pure breeds for you to see. Tracy
*mummy_hen*
Hi Tracy, I am not going to make a decision until we get back from holiday and see how the girls get on in the eglu we have hired from Cinnamon and if they are happy enough in it then it seems it will be an eglu we are going for. However, it would be useful to see the cube in situe as have only seen other peoples photos on here so i could be imagining it a lot bigger/smaller than it really is, etc. Would be lovely to come and see your new girls as well!
