My chicks are three weeks old!

They are absolutely bonkers too!

Here they are rather subdued but happy as they have 'escaped' from the brooder annexe

I still have no idea what breeds they are or if they are male or female. I really hope to have a couple of females amongst them. On the left is a black/white chick which hatched out of a small white egg. Second from the left is the suspected Araucana, now sporting some stylish showgirl type headgear  it also hatched from a small white egg. The next two came from large light brown eggs and both have a lot of black and brown feathers. The chick on the far right was also from a light brown large egg and I think it is a bit Welsummer (in the face) with a bit of exchequor leghorn (black and white feathers and long legs).

I made a pen for them on the lawn today and they spent half an hour running round like a bunch of nutters and screaming at everything they picked up

Oh, and they can fly  quite a distance :shock:

:D

Lovely....funny how they tell you they shouldn't perch till a certain age......and all they want to do is perch  .

Yes! , fingers too, you can't get them off!! They even sleep with their toes curled around an imaginary perch :D

Looks like some sort of barring pattern in the end chick :?

Yes, both ends, so to speak, are black and white with barred wings, but slightly different to each other. Parents are any of the following breeds, Welsummer, Exchequor Leghorn, Cuckoo Marans, Araucanas and Light Sussex.

In that case I'd say the barred chicks will have Cuckoo Marans in them, the brown/black ones Welsummer/ Sussex and the wee tufty Araucana one. I don't see Leghorn in any of them yet. If the brown/black ones are totally schizo and neurotic then they def have Welsummer in them

Ah, thanks Fee! I must admit to not knowing a thing about Leghorns (or most other types of chicken  ), and assumed they were 'leggy':lol: So, what an Exchequor Leghorn is I don't know!

The little Araucana looking one is so small compared to the others, I weighed it today and it was 129 grams against the heaviest, second from right on pic which was 234 grams. The Araucana looking one is virtually fully feathered though, and this morning flew from the brooder doorway up onto the kitchen worktop, a distance of over six feet  It has a really impressive wingspan too. I am beginning to think it is a sparrow crossed with a cockatoo  It has really small feet too!

Fee, thanks for the pic, are they yours? They are handsome :D

One thing which has really thrown me and I never thought of before, is the chick fluff colour bears no resemblence to the feathered bird. My darkest chick was all white underneath from the beak to the tail, and is now showing black and dark brown feathers as the fluff comes off, strange :D

Look forward to seeing photos of them as they grow.

Oh don't worry, regular updates will be forthcoming, especially as I need help figuring out what breeds they may be

I hatched the Exchequers with the intention of keeping one but ended up selling them......to a couple of Scottish Omleteers :D

It's true.....often the chicks hatch and have no colour resemblance to the adult bird, and I've had hens who's colour or pattern changes after a moult.
