Really stupid question...

Recommended Posts

..... but what's the best way to use my mini greenhouse?? In the past I've had one of those mini plastic ones and have just stuck my tomatoes in there when they were big enough.

This year hubby relented and let me get a posher version - it's wood and polycarbonate, with 4 lovely shelves for seedlings and the like.

Currently I've got a tray of sunflower seedlings, a tray of tomato seedlings (with more indoors in case they die outside!) and some tiny petunia plugs I just got yesterday. At the mo I'm opening the roof and doors during the day, figuring they need the fresh air / sun / rain and closing them up again at night. Is this the right thing to do?

I'd like to put more of my seedlings out there as they are taking up so much windowsill space and are starting to get a bit leggy with reaching for the light :( But will it be too cold out there for them? Should I be leaving the doors and roof shut at all time to keep them warm, presuming they'll get enough light through the clear polycarbonate?

Any advice greatly appreciated, I'm a bit of a newbie if you hadn't guessed! This is my first year trying to grow anything other than tomatoes and strawberries and I've been getting very excited seeing the seeds germinating, so I don't want to then go and kill them all off!

Thanks in advance,

Laura.

Any seedling or plant that suddenly goes from a warm cosseted environment to a much colder one will suffer a "check" in growth, so you need to gradually acclimatise things from the house to the greenhouse. I would imagine your greenhouse is colder than your windowledges over night, but if you could move them from the house to the greenhouse during the day, then in at night for a few days, after that they should be tough enough to manage in the greenhouse.

Good light is really important for seedlings, so worth doing soon, as very pale leggy seedlings never really turn into grat plants.
