Anyone going the Rochester Sweeps festival?

Recommended Posts

Just thought I'd see if anyone is coming along to the Rochester Sweeps festival?

It's my first excursion in my Morris costume and I'm really excited. (I've got a thread in the crafty fingers section about my costume :D )

Apparently it's the biggest May celebration in the country. Should be brill.

Here's a link so you can see what I'm going on about.

If anyone's coming, my side (the green Dragons) will be in groups of sides who are playing at different points/ times around the town

10.00 - 11.15 George Vaults

11.30 - 12.45 Visitor info centre

13.00 - 14.00 War memorial

14.15 - 15.30 - Two Brewers

15.45 - 17.00 - HSBC (although I may have gone home by then)

Do come and say hello if you're around. I'll be the one in the silly green top hat playing the Tenor Sax :D

So many people think Morris dancing is silly, but I'm having a great time being part of it all. I'd definately have a go at dancing if I could! There are so many young people in our side, which is fab. So much cheaper and more fun than aerobics lessons

Sounds like fun. I went to a festival in Rochester a few years ago but I think that was a Dickens festival. If I get the chance I shall try to get there. :D

Although saying that once I'd hit submit a photo flashed in my brain of my kids having their photo taken with a couple of sweeps so it could have been the Sweeps festival

Wow, blast from the past!

My OH and I used to do Rochester Sweeps every year with his morris side, must have been 5 or 6 times in late 80's early 90's.

That morris side folded and Adderbury (who he dances with now) don't do festivals so we've not been for years.

Sidmouth folk festival was the last one we did properly (ie camping etc) - in fact, our eldest was conceived there! (and referred to as Sid throughout the pregnancy as a consequence :lol: )

Have to say that, not being a morris dancer, the experience of spending an entire weekend traipsing around while they dance gets a bit tedious after the 10th weekend in a row of doing it. I love the music, and dancing at ceilidhs, just never really had the same passion for the morris as my OH.

Also doesn't help that I was pushed backwards off a wall I was sitting on watching the procession last time I was at Rochester, by a morris side "fool" who took issue with me because I wasn't clapping

I'm really hoping the weather is good, as my sax doesn't come out to play in the rain :anxious:

Quite right too! I wouldn't let mine out in the rain either. There must be a market opening for the person that can invent a lightweight but wind and rain proof umbrella that could slot in the music holding bracket on the sax.

I for one would definately pay money for that :D
