chook safe plants?

Recommended Posts

Hello all

we are building a walk in run for our girls and I would love to put some big hardy plants in the run for a bit of shelter and for them to forage under.

I just wondered if anyone could recommed any plants?. (they seem to love my rosmeary and sage in my herb patch!!!)

many thanks.

Mine don't eat the rhododendron, but they do snap off branches. Mine scoff the lavender too, although some lavender plants are untouched - I guess it depends on the variety - I have quite a few different ones. They don't eat roses (so far) and they don't eat viburnums. We are growing Jerusalem artichokes in front of the cube to give shelter from the sun - they grow really tall. It is fenced off a bit, after they scratched some of the shoots off, but come the winter and we will benefit from the underground tubers - yum.

I have just bought some pittisporum and a variety of choisya - so far the leaves are untouched. They also haven't touched my spirea - which has red and yellow leaves. You could grow Kerria or lilac or wiegela - larger shrubs that provide nice shelter underneath once established. The girls love scratching around under those - but haven't eaten the leaves. They don't eat daffodils or tulips either - yet!
