One of my hens laid a LASH to-day(she is still off colour)

Recommended Posts

One of my girls who had been off colour about 2 - 3 weeks ago and I was not sure she was laying at all was in the nest box at lunchtime and when I saw her come out of the eglu I went to see what eggs were there - she had laid what I presume was a lash - a rubbery hard lump of stuff which was quite revolting but I hope that this is what was bothering her as could not find anything else and she has been wormed and ivomeced for scaley leg.

Hopefully she will start to lay again and that will be that - I must admit to being very squeamish about it all and could not have dissected it at all as it was warm!!!! :vom:

Edited to say took it to my vets and it was cut into and the vet thought it may have been calcified yolk!!

She has now laid a softee with no shell but whole and still in the sac but did not look well for the afternoon to-day.

I never asked any! as I work there and prob have read more about these things than they have!!! (from the omlet forum) But they had never seen the lash before - I also have scaley leg mites again and am zapping to-day with surgical spirit and bought a scaley leg spray this morning as a preventative - its great you can zap the legs without having to pick them up! - it has Citrol in it and no egg withdrawal.

Boy these hens are problematic this spring for me.

Yes its just called Scaley Leg SPray by Barrier animal healthcare and is suitable for organic farming too - just a deterrent so I am going to use it after the surgical spirit has done its job and keep ahead of it. It cost me £11.65 for a 500 ml spray

My theory is the wild birds which feed off my many feeders and the girls congregate underneath it and I am sure they catch it from them. One had it and I treated her with ivermectin as she was not laying and now another has it and the third showing signs - sigh - cannot win and what with the lash and softees I am really not winning here.

Well harriet is still unwell and passing softies - there was a beautiful egg with no shell and a burst sac in the poo tray this morning - boy was it orange too. She has had a dirty behind so tonight we bathed her bum and its quite bald really not pecked but wondering if she is having a mini moult? and put scaley leg mite spray on her legs and put invermectin drops on her neck again - she has had the works and limestone flour and poultry spice in the porridge again to-day to see what is going to work - fingers crossed.

one of mine CAN take all day to produce a softee, then the shell isn't expelled until next day or next egg. this tends to mean that she is "off" for longer.

One of my new ex bats in;t lay in the morning as is her norm, she looked Softee ish, then jsut before bed time having sat hunched in the corner of the run laid a oroper egg just there. she didn't perk straight up, went to bed ,sat in the nest, came out again, did it a few times then laid a softee on the doorstep!

nothing at all next day then back to normal!
