what age will be able to sex the chick?

Recommended Posts

hi all

just rescued a baby chick (bantam) to cut a long story short the person who owned it was a bit of a haard faced farmer and it was being attacked my the others in its pen- she seperated it to neck it (basically couldnt do with the hassle!)

i couldnt let her kill it- it was only a few hours old- so i know have a baby under heat in my front room! lol

i was wondering at what age i will be able to tell if its a make or female? its now 6 days old and doing really well. if its a girl i will keep it with my 3 girls- (hopefully if they like it :? ) if a boy i will find a new home for him. as dont think the neighbours would be too happy with me!

thanks for your help

Katie

Hi there, well gosh I think you've got a hard job ahead. Sexing the chick might depend on what it is, some you can tell at hatching, others you can't tell until an egg pops out or it goes cock-a-doodle-do which, with pure breeds, can be over 20 weeks. How old are your current girls, because the chick won't be able to go in with them until it's atbout 16 weeks and it'll be a pretty sad chick by itself til then. Is there any way you could contemplate a friend for it, or maybe get someone else to help rear it until it's old enough to go in with your girls?

Anyway, good luck, hope it turns out to be a girl
