We rang the vets at 6.20 to see when they closed and they said 6.30 but they said they would wait for us as its an emergency. Got there at 6.30 on the dot and the vet said "sorry were shut, bye." and drove off. Some people

 

So we got home and I popped over to my trusty chicken friend down the road and she had some purple spray and antiseptic spray. She brought it down to my house and we checked each hen over fully.

 

Daisy has no injuries as she was hidden away in nest box broody!

 

Molly has 1 very small puncture wound about 5mm diameter

 

Poppy was injury free as she flew over our 6ft fence and thats very high for a fat light sussex!

 

Lucy has 3 puncture wounds, 1 above her tail and two bite marks under wing

 

Milly has 2 , 1 above her tail and 1 on her back.

 

We sprayed all the wounds with the antiseptic then the purple spray. They are all living in the house all the time now with porridge and water with battles in. They are all eating and drinking well and have all layed an egg since yesterday. We have left all the windows on the coop open in the day so they get enough light.

 

The fox came back last night but my dad got his catapult out and hit it with a pellet. He doesn't think he'll be coming back now (It's not hurt just warning him!)

 

My chicken friend has also said that when we are ready for more hens she has a bantam buff laced wyandotte hen, 8 RIR bantam chicks and Brahmas, hens and chicks that we can have a few off her.

Tom, that is appalling.

You should report him to the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.

An animal in distress is in distress whether it's an expensive horse or a chicken.

He should have seen her especially as he knew you were coming.

The RCVS may not do anything but they will have to inform him that a complaint has been made and it should put the wind up him sufficiently that he won't do it again in a hurry.

I'm shocked at that too - in all the years I've used vets I cannot think of one who would have done that, especially as you were there at the door with an injured animal.

 

Glad to hear that they seem to be doing ok, it must have been an awful experience.

I would also change vets and let everyone know why. Ours are really good, even stayed open for a hedgehog. Haven't taken a chicken yet. Fingers crossed that I never need to.

Vet's, when accepted, have to swear an oathe, part of which is exactly as the previous posted stated; they will not leave animals in distress.

I know it sounds strange, but am sure it's true. If I were you I would report the vet in question, and change vet practice' if you can. It is totally unacceptable behaviour.

So sorry Tom, have only just read about your fox attack . So sorry you have lost Floyd and so many of his lovely ladies .

 

I hope that Milly and the rest of the girls start to recover from their wounds soon. That vet makes me so .

 

I've seen the photos of your possible new girls on another post, that is what lead me to this post. I hope she settles in well and helps to heal your sadness a bit.
