Squash

Recommended Posts

I grew mine in a large planter in the greenhouse last year - it yielded just 1 squash but it was very good - I was told you need to leave it to mature when picked and then we ate it - made soup with it and it was lovely. I must admit the leaves were very scraggy though - bit like the courgette leaves. Yellow early and I snipped them off of last years one.

I bought my squash plant from a garden centre...

Started most things from seed - but the squash plants were only £1.50 and looked so healthy - seemed the sensible thing to do, rather than trying to get them to germinate!

I planted it out into it's growbag at the weekend - hoping it will do well in the greenhouse! But is my first year growing one - so do only have one plant as a test...

Hope your greenhouse is big they do need a lot of room ;)

I wondered that... Struggled to find how big the plant would grow! It's the only chicken proof place left in the garden though now - so it's there or nowhere!!

Went a bit overboard this year with the veg - I blame this forum :D:lol:

I plant my squash 3" apart.. that will give you an idea ;)

3"... Hmmm..

Think it could be sort of OK'ish... It can grow around the base of the tomato plants... Although watering could become tricky!

If things go a bit wild, could always fence the chickens in the top of the garden, and then let the squash grow out the door of the greenhouse...

I have a vision from The Day of the Triffids in my head....

I hope it produces more than one fruit though - otherwise with all this hassle and space, Squash will not be making a repeat appearance in my garden!

We usually plant them about 2 feet apart and they ramble all over the ground. If we get a good summer you should get plenty of fruits, but the last couple of cooler wet summers have not been good for squash plants.

I am goint to try one of mine up a wigwam too this year.
