seraphine
Right, so as originally planned we are going to stick with the hens provided by Omlet and that means our shiny and 3 will be arriving on Tuesday! Along with the Eglu, we have ordered Mixed chicken grit 1.25kg, Bokashi active, Garlic powder and Organic apple cider vinegar. I have already bought mixed corn and a bag of layers mash. What else might we need? I can a take a trip to our local equestrian store tomorrow. Bedding such as Aubiose I guess, for the nestbox, is that right? A very excited Seraphine and 2 little girls who can't wait to get their chooks
katieadams
Hows about some red mite powder? I didn't get some at first and wished I had when I discovered you can use it as prevention and it smells nice too - just like olbas oil Be warned, the auboise comes in a huge bale, we use shredded paper in ours so we don't have to store it
C&T
Congratulations!! Apart from the red mite powder, sounds as though you have everything under control!! Oh, and make sure you have cleared your diary, as you will spend all the weekend watching them!!
seraphine
Thanks both! Will I be able to get red mite powder from the equestrian place as well or should I call Omlet back and ask them to add it to the order?
Yolky
You don't have to have red mite powder but it is a nice extra. I haven't got any and I have had my chookies a year and not had redmite as yet.
Guest
Hi yes the aubiose or hemcore will last ages. I have only had mine a few weeks but use newspaper sheets to put under the hemcore just to make cleaning easier , just as the weather got damp and warmer I have just sprinkled a dash of red mite powder into the nest area(but I too havent spotted any bugs on the chickens yet). I use newspaper to line the poo tray too. You will need to get some wormer too Flubenvent is generally what I see on here and what I ended up buying on line ie petsmed . I think as long as you do it 3 monthly approx or more if needed. Oh remember the excitement of getting the chickens, I got mine with my from omlet and have been very very pleased cant fault the service and products at all, have had no trouble with either they generally look after themselves, I just provide board and lodgings. Good luck hope this weather holds out indie

I got mine from Omlet - added it to my order. Some are lucky and don't need it - but we did within a couple of weeks of getting them lots of feathers in the Eglu each morning - and it was not due to pecking! I now use it as a preventative whenever clean out the eglu.
seraphine
Thanks everyone, I'll definitely get some red mite powder, too late to add it to my Omlet order now though. And the Aubiose - what do I actually do with this? Do I put it in the nestbox for them to sleep on? Sooooo excited for Tuesday!
atsw
What else might we need? You forgot the most important thing for anyone who contributes to this forum.... a camera . Andrew
Ain't Nobody Here
Congratulations . Roll on Tuesday . And the Aubiose - what do I actually do with this? Do I put it in the nestbox for them to sleep on? What are you putting the run on? If on soil, you can put the aubiose on top of the soil. You can also put it in the nestbox. They'll probably sleep on the roosting bars (although some sleep in the nestbox - and poo there ). You don't really need any in the poo tray - I put 2 or 3 sheets of newspaper in there. They will kick some out into the tray in any case which helps to absorb any dampness .
