atsw
Look what turned up in my conservatory this morning . Wonder how that happened . Got two others that hatched this morning (one not looking too good though, got a leg that is clearly not quite right) and another dozen and a half eggs in an incubator. None are mine, doing some short-notice half-term chick sitting for friends the village! Andrew
Chickvic
Aww they are gorgeous. Not tempted to 'lose' a few when they go back?
Lewis
What are they? I'll take a wild stab at Pekin's
atsw
What are they? Absolutely no idea . Some of the eggs were 'home grown', put under a couple of broody hens in the flock. The other eggs (all shapes, colours and sizes) were a job lot off e-bay. Sadly, one of the two that hatched early this morning (not in the photo) didn't make it, but that's life I guess . Still, one of the 18 in the incubator is now squeaking and starting to peck their way out, so might have happy news in the morning . atsw
We had another one hatch at 4:00am this morning (OH says I'm like an expectant father all over again, up at all hours in the night ). Another dark coloured one, so that makes up for the one we lost yesterday. The white one is now 48hrs old and seems in reasonable health, but as you can see, there's certainly something wrong with it's legs. I've posted a note in the "Chicken Clinic" forum to see if anyone thinks there's anything that can be done. Andrew
atsw
Well, poor "splat" (as we nick-named her) didn't make it, but the remaining three are doing really well. The two biggest chicks are now showing real feathers and one is trying really hard to fly. The little chap (we're sure it's a chap, already showing a yellow comb) is very sweet, and is getting on just fine with the older two. The chooks proper owners will be back from their hols tomorrow. It will be sad to say goodbye to the three chicks, we've grown very found of them this last 6 days. We've still got 12 eggs in the incubator, but they are now over a week past their hatch-by-date, so I don't think we'll be seeing any last minute additions to the flock . After all this fun, I quite want one of my girls to go broody, then we can get some fertile eggs and raise some chicks of our own. Space Chick
RIP Splat. But welcome to the world the other three, which are adorable.
