Hi Everyone,

 

My name's Karin, very new to this so bear with me please!

 

I'm looking to order a very soon along with 4 ladies to live in it (very excited!!) but I have a question that I'm hoping someone can help me with! Along with my 4 new ladies i'd love to get a and wondered if anyone has experience of keeping chooks and ducks together in a cube. Would the duck be able to navigate the stairs?

 

Hoping someone can help me out on this!

I dont think they would manage the ladder i'm afraud, someone way condradict me

 

I don't think ducks even 'do' ramps very well either so replacing the ladder with a ramp wouldnt be ok...(thinking out loud!)

 

You can buy the cube without the wheel assembly so could put it on the ground but then ducks dont need roosting bars and chickens do so that creates another problem

 

I am not 100% sure chickens and ducks make good housemates anyway as ducks make such a mess but I dare say someone will be along soon with some proper advice

I've seen chickens and ducks kept together fine, but they were in a converted shed, so the ducks slept on the bottom and the chickens used the perch to roost.

 

I think ducks would be fine in a cube on the floor with no roosting bars in it.

 

Does anyone think you could remove half of the roosting bars so that the ducks didn't have to use them, but the chickens could

Ducks would not manage the cube ladder at all.

 

They could manage a slight inclined ramp(but not at a severe angle as the cube ladders) as ducks are prone to leg/foot injuries especially heavy breeds.

Domestic ducks do not perch so removing half the perch may work however they will also no doubt go and sleep in the nest area.

As other posters say they are very messy and do need to have access to water..

 

My neighbours keep both but it is in a full size shed with ducks on the floor and chickens up high.

Also during the day they free range seperately and have access to large ponds.

Probably not bes to keep them together in a cube.......as they have different requirements.

 

Ours have a wooden ramp to get up to their house - we raised it because of a rat problem - but it is nowhere near as steep as the Cube ladder and is made of wood, they wouldn't manage the Cube ladder.

Thanks so much for all your advice. Although I have seen chickens and ducks living together happily, I was concerned that the ducks wouldn't be able to negotiate the ladder on the cube, and the comments posted here have clarified that for me.

 

I feel modification of the cube would be beyond my capabilities! On reflection I'm just going to stick with the chooks!! Was maybe being a little ambitious at this stage!

i have got my duck in with 12 of my hens and she does'nt mind being there but she has a seperate house out side of the cube now but when i had 7 ducks in there i the cube without the stilts in the walk in run and with the bars taken out and they got in and out fine
