Chicks with a cold- now a bubbly noise too.

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I have only had my chicks for 3 days now- they are 3 Pekins and 1 Silkie aged between 8 and 10 weeks old.

I have been keeping them inside at night in a large fish tank with a heat mat on one end, and during the day they have been outside in a rabbit hutch and run.

They have Auboise substrate inside with some straw on the heated end of the tank.

I noticed they had started sneezing saturday night- but assumed it was the dust in the straw as it often makes me sneeze- so i removed the straw but the sneezing continued- and now i can hear one of them sounds like a bubbly noise when they breathe- im assuming this is an infection? The Silkie has a bit of a wet beak around the nostril too. They seem bright in themselves tho but am a little concerned as they are so young.

The silkie seems the worse but 2 other Pekins also are sneezing.

I was wondering as I cant take the chicks to the vet till tomorrow now- is this something that Citricidal would clear up do you think or is this something when antibiotics are needed? Im not asking for a medical opinion just what you think? As I may be able to get Citricidal without a stressful (for the chick) trip to the vet.

Thanks for your help

Owen

Sorry Owen, I don't have any experience of chicks. However, going by what Plum has suggested, I would recommend a vet visit.

If it is infectious bronchitis, it can travel to their ovary and cause problems with egg laying when older - my girl with egg peritonitis might have developed it because of IB.

Good luck, hope you can get them sorted out soon.

Hi everyone,

Well im back now from the vet- he says they have Co-sigh-tus (thats how he pronounced it- im sure thats not how its spelt.

Looking through the Omlet disease list the nearest I can find is called Coccidiosis - but he called it the common Chicken cold- and Coccidiosis doesnt read like thats what it is.

So not sure if I have go this correct- any ideas anyone?

Anyhow- whatever they have- they are now on Baytril- 2 drops twice a day- which is good news- and they are going back in a week.

Very pleased that it hopefully this is easily curable- i was worried about the little ones- and was the best £20 ive spent in a long time.

Im treating all 4 chicks even though only 2 are sneezing.

Thanks for your help- will keep you updated on how they get on.

Owen
