Lewis
Hi. I've been to loads of places for Garden Lime (its too dangerous to sell in B&Q ), I've eventually got some, but when I got home its small little granules, and not powder like I was expecting. Is it normally granules or a powder? Can I still use it or should I try and grind it up before I use it. I don't want them to peck at the balls and eat them. Also, do I just rake it all over (they're in a mud based run) and dig it in? Thanks
stoice
I've used the granular stuff and had no problems, you can get it powdered too. The girls don't eat it, but it shouldn't harm them if they have a nibble. Garden lime isn't harmful or caustic (unlike the lime in cement for example), it's just pulverised limestone or chalk. (Being 'too dangerous to sell in B&Q seems a bit odd to me too) I just sprinkle a few handfuls over the soil and rake over. I usually do this with stalosan as well (Powdered disinfectant). Check out this site about garden lime and soil etc. But then click onto his 'chickens' section (top right) for an interesting blog on his chooks
Lewis
Thanks I ground up a bit and dug it in, but I might but a bit more on later. I asked at B&Q and the garden bit didn't have it, so I went to the building bit and they said they used to sell it but its too dangerous Don't know
The Dogmother
They must have thought you meant caustic lime Some makes are powder and others are more like little balls.
Lewis
They must have thought you meant caustic lime Some makes are powder and others are more like little balls. Maybe The one man asked what it was for + I said well its for the chicken's run, it neutralises the soil. "Oh, well I'm the mower man, don't ask me" Then the customer behind me went "Chickens ?" I thought being little balls that it would be more appealing to the chickens and make them peck at it How much should I be using? The back of the run is 10ft, the front goes down to 7ft and it is 13ft long. I only used a bit to start with (about half a handful?) and I can always all more afterwards. The Dogmother
It won't do them any harm at all Lewis; it's just calcium carbonate. I don't measure it, just dig over the soil, then sprinkle a mix of garden lime and Stalosan or Bio-Dri over it. Just use enough so that it's covered with a sprinkling. Thanks I'll put a bit more on tomorrow. If anything it'll give them thicker shells
