Down to three viable eggs, an update, and some advice please

Recommended Posts

Amy got off the nest to stretch her legs earlier giving me an opportunity to candle the eggs she has been sat on.

One is fine, with movement visible. Sadly the other showed a hairline fracture in the shell of the egg. (more on that in a moment).

I have put Amy into the 'nursery' with the eggs. She wasn't happy at being moved and made some cross, tutting and trilling. I have set up a webcam so I can watch her. At the moment she is not going back onto the nest.

My question is. How long can I leave it before I need to take the eggs into the incubator? I want to give her the chance to sit back on them, but, at the same time, need to make sure the chicks get a chance to live.

As for the poor unfortunate chick whose egg got fractured. I thought I'd take a look inside. There was a chick in there, I estimate the age to be between 10-12 days. Fascinating stuff. I have taken a photo, if anyone would like a look. I wont post it up because some may find it upsetting.

I'd like to see a photo too. I'm a bit wierd like that  but its really interesting to see them develop.

Eggs can go for quite a while before they will 'die' - some have been up to 6 hours.

I'd probably get the incubator set up and ready just in case.
