I know you can get odd shaped eggs but this is my first one and i am worried. is this normal?

 

 

I have 5 hens and four of them have been laying for a while. We are waiting for the 5th one to start laying, could this be a 1st egg for her??

Is the shell hard?

 

I don't think it is uncommon to occassionally get an odd egg - as long as this is not regularly then it is no big problem.

 

I believe it is common if chickens have just started laying, it can also sometimes be a sign that they are lacking certain things such as water - do they always have access to clean fresh water?

 

I wouldn't worry about it, we have had a few in the past and have never been a sign of something sinister.

We have had eggs before like that, so try not to worry. It could be her 1st one...

Ditto Chelsea. I've had a few odd shaped ones from established layers and first timers. They will settle down. Dont worry.

Thank you, The shell is normal ie hard but it just looks wrinkly. The girls always have fresh water and grit so hopefully you are right and maybe its a 1st egg for our last girl to lay fingers crossed. Apart from this egg they all look fine and are acting as normal, so as you say i'll be keeping an extra eye on them.

Are these eggs still ok to eat, not sure i would want to though

I had softies that looked like that but inside they were normal(but usually due to being in the poo tray..the cocker spaniel enjoyed those off the ground)! Yummy

 

They have stopped now as the birds seem to have gotten into a laying routine now

I know this sounds funny - but eggs are soft (ish) until they come out & they then harden when the air gets too them. Wrinkles and odd shapes are all down to the flexing of the vent muscles. Sometimes they look like they have a pulse. I've been watching my chooks too much I think.
