Scottie
My Wheaten Marans has a sore bit on her foot - noticed it last night, bathed it in salt water and put Sudocrem on it and popped her back in with the others (she is head hen in the flock). This morning one of the others kept pecking at it and won't leave it alone - it's bleeding slightly. I managed to catch Clover and have brought her inside to keep her quite separate. She is in a cat box which isn't huge but she can turn round in it and has food and water. She seems fine in it and is not at all upset. Is it okay to leave her in such a small space for a couple of days until her foot clears up? I don't really want to put her back in before it's all healed. Thanks Sheila Edited June 6, 2009 by Guest
theherd123
It might be wise to make sure she can have some free range time with the other girls too. Hopefully free ranging together will be more interesting for the others than pecking at Clovers foot, Clover will still be able to retain her place as head girl and also she will get time out to stretch and feel 'chickeny' with her pals. As for her foot - i would keep bathing it and make sure it doesnt become infected.
Budgies
Hi Sheila. The trouble with wounds is that hens are drawn to them and will peck repeatedly once they see red. If you have any gentian violet spray (which is purple, do be careful of your clothes etc because it stains!) you can use that on her foot to stop anyone pecking. If you don't have any available (you can get it from horse suppliers or online) use blue food colouring to take away the red colour. That way she should be okay to then mix with the other hens. The Dogmother
Exactly what I was just going to post Budgies! Do keep an eye on it, you don't want an infection to set in and for her to get bumble foot. That can be nasty.

Nicola O
which is purple, do be careful of your clothes etc because it stains! Don't I know it, after spraying Bertha's foot this evening my right hand is now covered in purple splodges. That will be a talking point at work tomorrow. Scottie
Thanks for the replies. I kept Clover in all day yesterday, then bathed her foot, managed to get Aloe Vera Purple Spray and plastic gloves. Our tactics for tackling this fairly flightly hen is to wrap her in a towel and put a sock over her head! This seems to completely calm her down. Sprayed her with the stuff and then put her back in overnight with the others. Today so far, all is well. Sheila
sandyhas3chucks
have had to chuckle at this, must stop talking on phon & reading posts at same time. I have this wonderful image of a chook wearing a sock over her head & wearing plastic gloves, which I was thinking was not necessary at all
Scottie
Unfortunately, things are not going well for Clover - most of the others were pecking at her sore foot, so have now brought her in, bathed it again and covered it in tea tree and sudocrem. Will reinstate the dog kennel and eglu run so that she can move about in peace for a few days next to the WIR. Have just noticed Dolly is now standing about on one foot - no sign of blood although Bluebelle seems to have an unhealthy interest in her. Will try and catch Dolly in a while and see what is the matter. Nothing is ever easy is it? Sheila
sandyhas3chucks
perhaps when they are togeher again, just purple spray and or tea tree no sudocrem. do you give yoghurt? I have two that thought sudocrem was tasty
