It can be tough hatching - warning some gory detail

Recommended Posts

Thanks for your honesty, HEN.

I had considered trying hatching this year or next. I was sure that I was up to dealing with potential 'Cockadoodle doo-ing', and any unwell chicks.

You have brought me back to reality - although I might be up to it, my children definitely aren't ready to face the possibile losses.

I will be waiting a couple of years until they are, before I bend OH's arm up his back and bring in some fertile eggs.

Hi

This is a really good posting and one of the most open realistic ones have read so thanks for sharing the experiences good and bad.

Real eye opener

Thanks indie

I'm so glad you posted this post. Hatching is not always hunkydory. We have had chicks in the past that were weak & died, ones where the egg wasn't fully absorbed & ones that pipped the underside or wrong end of the egg & never got out.

We have never had to cull any, as they all died very soon after hatching - or within the egg. I couldn't cull any myself - but do have friends that do the deed regularly & would do so if I ever needed to.

Never think that hatching is easy & sweet, as sometimes it is horrible.

Thanks for your honesty, HEN.

Our hatch is due on Tuesday and I was counting on hubby (country boy) to be around to deal with any problems. But now he's on a course Tues/Weds, so its down to Chive and I. I'm dreading any problems but have to be prepared to do the deed - rather that than watch an animal suffer.

Thanks for all your replys. I appreciate all your positive comments about my post. I wasn't 100% sure about posting it as I didn't want to upset people, but, like many of you said, its so much better to go into hatching knowing what you may have to face.

Its been hard, but it hasn't put me off trying again.

What have you called your hand reared chick? Lucky might be an appropriate name. i think you are very brave dispatching of the chicks, i'm afraid I'd have to take mine if i had any to friends OH who has chucks . I am spending time with them. You are all right chucks are great fun and have funny characters like most pets.

You are so right. I'm glad I had seen posts like this to warn me of all the things that I may face before I dicided to hatch. Thank you.
