Not eating pelletts

Recommended Posts

Hi,

some advice please, the Girls who I have had for 3 weeks now, dont really like the pelletts that came from Omlet and I seem to throw most of them away at the end of the week, just on the Wiggly Wigglers site and they have Layers mash with Bokashi, can i give them this instead of the Pelletts, I ask because I sometimes give them the Bokashi Bran as a treat and they love it. So could they have this all the time and be happy Chooks??

I had exactly the same issue last year and went for the bokashi mash from Wiggly Wigglers. In some ways, I wish that I hadn't though because lots of people on here suggested that they would eat the pellets once they started laying and I think that I should have stuck with it.

The problem is that the mash goes everywhere and I get through it really quickly. They won't touch pellets now so I think that I am stuck with it. I give my two new girls a mxture and they seem quite happy with the pellets>> Go figure

Not sure that this helps you much - sorry!

I suspect that if you feed them something with bokashi bran mixed in, they might ignore the meal and eat the bran!!

However, many chooks do prefer meal - some people prefer not to feed it because the girls can make a mess of it, but my girls were ok with it and adored it.

I suggest that you make any changeovers slowly - chickens are real creatures of habit and it will probably upset them quite a lot if you just switch overnight.

Mix some meal in with their pellets initially, then gradually increase the meal to pellets ratio until you're on all meal - over a week or so.

We tried two types of pellets and our fussy chickens only ever picked at them.

We didn't want to feed them layers mash all year round, so tried them on some organic pellets and they seem to like those better. The brand we get has a smaller size of pellet than any other feed we've seen, which might have had something to do with it?
