soggy bottomed hen! Help

Recommended Posts

I have 4 GNR(Bluebelle)(white chicken)(Bluebelle) hens one of which is a 16 month old sussex (white chicken) , she seems to have gone off lay and when we do get the very occasional egg it is very elongated. Lately her feathers around and below her vent have become wet and stained a beige colour. I got fed up with seeing her looking so messy today so bathed her and gently 'blow dried' her rear and tummy.....all of which she seemed to love and although the skin was slightly red as was her vent it looked healthy! However within an hour her rear was wet again, not pooey just wet and the area below the vent looks a bit red and slightly moist....although I don't think the skin is broken or weepy. Any ideas of what is going on? She seems alert, good appetite, social and lively. My other hens are laying, have clean vents, and have good appetites.

Help  would be appreciated, I am not too worried about her not laying but I am concerned about this wetness, it can't be good for her.

Thanks Rosie :|

Could it be she's drinking more in the warm weather and producing more urine?

You say she's not laying but is behaving normally? When my girl is trying to lay a softie she passes fluid, presume lubricant around the area but she acts poorly then.

Another thought is has she been sitting in her own droppings?

Sorry I am not experienced. Hope she's ok.
