Dedication to my chicks or what?

Recommended Posts

For the last two days now i have been getting up really really early and walking four miles to let my chicks out into there run.

Yesterday i arrived at my stables at about 710am that was way to late so this morning i got there for 5am, as soon as i open the door the chooks burst out into the run!

Yesterday it only took me 50mins to walk as i was walking quite fast, but today i the dog in tow so i took twice as long to get there as we had so she could do her business every now and then and have a good sniff around. I started walking at 330am, it was really pleasent, no cars on the road i just hear the birds and the sound of the motoway in the distance.

I got to within half an hour of reaching the stables, when i started to hear cockerals crowing, so i thought typical, gonna have to get up earlier tomoz and get down sooner :wall::wall:

Someone told me that i should ideally let the chicks out during "civil twilight" which is just before sunrise.

I plan to get up earlier tomoz! at least once i let the chooks out and clean there trays i can go back to sleep on a sofa we have down the yard!

i only make the single journey in the morning as mum picks me up after the horses are done. so thats four miles, then in the evenings just before it gets dark, once i get my bike sorted grr i will do a double journey totalling 8 miles, so that 4miles walking and 8 miles cycling per day! ill be super fit by the end of the year!!

I am i doing the right thing?

I think you're a bit of a couch potato Sam !!

Mine are let out anytime from 6.30am. Not sure I'd be losing sleep over it though, you need your rest or you'll fall off your bike and fall asleep in a field. You'll be okay though as nettles don't sting in June.

Wow, Sam!

I am totally impressed at your dedication.:clap::clap:

I have my girls in their cube safely within their walk-in run, so just leave the cube door open and they get themselves up. I feel really lazy now.:lol::lol:

I was thinking of leaving the door of the cube open so they could get themselves out but was told they were 2 young for me to do that being only 6-7weeks old!

Mums said to me that since ill be up early anyway, i can paint ther yard for her, joy! At least it gets the jobs done i suppose!

Is it possible to do to much walking/cycling, as i be doing about 12 miles a day in total, it wont do me any harm will it?

They really won't suffer for being shut in the cube until you would normally get there for the horses. It seems totally unecessary to lose quality sleep just to let them out of their house. I totally admire your dedication but you have to look after yourself too.

When I lived in Surrey, I used to cycle 10 miles each way to work in Victoria, London and another 5 miles each way to do the firm's banking in Shepherd's Bush, so that was 30 miles a day for 5 days a week. Plus I used to cycle at weekends too.

I just wish I was as slim and fit as I was then. *wistful sigh*

In answer to your question, Sam....12 miles cycling/walking a day certainly won't cause you any harm. To the contrary, it will probably do you a lot of good. You might want to make sure you eat enough carbohydrate calories though, if this is a big increase on your usual exercise routine, and as someone else said, get plenty of sleep too. :D

eek that makes my 12 miles a day look like a walk in the park compared to what you used to do!

Thanks for all the advice everyone,

I will up my carbs and go to bed earlier in the evening!

Crikey Sam! Those chooks certainly have the upper hand! My 3 girls have got used to me letting them out around 6.45am so perhaps if you stick to a certain time each day they will get used to it? Chickens can be demanding but show 'em who's the Mummy! You don't want to be doing all that travelling on your own when the summer is over! :anxious:

I was worried last night as when i put my chooks to bed one of them was freezing cold, they are only young'uns i put some food in there cube for them aswell. I put them in at around 845pm and decided i would get down very early this morning, i set off at 230am with the dog in tow again, the sky was beautiful, filled with stars and a really bright moon crescent, again there were very few cars. i was determined to let my chooks out before the cockerals i passed yesterday started crowing, but alas, when i got to that stage on my journey, the were crowing away :doh::doh::doh: ! I am starting to believe that cockerals dont sleep! I put my chooks out at 4am and again as soon as i opened the door they blasted out lol.

It was quite spooky as i entered the lane my yard was on as there was suddenly loads of fog, reminiscent of scenes from the film Silent Hill.

I intend to get to the yard earlier tomoz to try and beat those darn cockerals!

I did a few yard jobs after i let the chooks out then went and kipped on the sofa for 2hrs before the farrier came at nine!

Since i have been getting up early i feel so much better and less grumpy!!

I beat the cockerals!!!! I set off with the dog at 2am and i got the area where the cockerals usually crow at 3am and there was perfect silence!!! Again the chooks came out as soon as i opened the door, Ollie managed the ladder but Lucy fell, she managed the first rung of the ladder then sort of fell off lol!

I got quite a few jobs done and still dont feel at all tired!! i now have a new sleeping arrangement where i sleep on an old sunbed with a horse blanket as a cover and the dog as a hot water bottle lol. works quite well actually!

Going to a McFLy concert at Westonbirt later, sister dragging me along with mum and dad aswell. they are not that bad, some of there songs are ok. I wasnt quite sure whether or not to go then i found out that most of the people going will be girls lol!

You really are dedicated! By the end of the summer you are going to be superfit, do make sure you get enough sleep though, as it doesn't sound to me as if you're getting enough. Short bursts of sleep don't make up for having a long, uninterrupted period of sleep.

I am familiar with this as a chronic insomniac. A few nights on short rations and I find I'm buzzing, feel as if I'm supercharged and everything seems wonderful. Be warned, there is a sudden slump around the corner, and you won't go on feeling so great!
