Last night when I watered my carrots (in pots) they were coming along nicely, this morning they've disappeared without a trace! Not a single shoot left. I was really chuffed with them too as I've never grown them before! Is it likely to be just slugs as there didn't seem to be any slug gunk on the pots or is there any other beastie partial to carrot shoots? All my other pots were untouched - just the carrots! Any ideas for protecting my next batch?

The slugs will eat them if they are still small but if they were more than an inch or so high I think DA's suggestion is more likely.

My first crop of carrots was decimated by slugs. A whole row gone over night.

Thanks for the replies! It's not really an area where rabbits would be - really built up - so it looks like it was probably the ninja slugs eating them without leaving a trace! Would crows or wood pigeons take them? They were on my list of suspects too. Not that it matters I suppose as I'm carrotless either way *sob*!

Plant some more! You still have time. Go for the shallow rooted ones, or 'chantennay' (sp) as they mature quicker.

You can sow carrots until August so all is not lost, this time put slug pellets down, if the hens aren't anywhere near.
