13 chickens - for a while PIC ADDED!

Recommended Posts

I got a call last week from someone who had just taken delivery of 2 omlet girls and a cube and had got 3 bantams as well. The Miss Pepperpot had pecked the poor bantams so much that she had made all of their heads bleed. The Gingernut ranger it seems was trying to protect the bantams. She wanted me to take her Miss PepperPot so that she would stop bullying the bantams. So at 9pm that night the lovely friendly "new girl" arrived. Her name had been Kimmy but it didn't really fit with us so we have renamed her Aggie. She is a lovely friendly girl and after living alone in the eglu for a week she is already running with our lovely flock.

Mum said that it would be unlucky to have 13 chickens - but I'd told her I really didnt' think it would be for long. Pickle, our last remaining ex-bat was looking like she had peritonitis. She did and Suzy our lovely vet put her to sleep. I had to wait 24 hours for an appointment as they were fully booked and when they referred me to another vet I was told "our exotic animal vet isn't in"! Suzy our vet doesn't think chickens are exotic - good job really as you pay more for those!

I'm not that sad - she had a year and 3 months out of the battery and enjoyed the sun on her wings.

Aggie the new girl is fast becoming Mum's favorite, she is very friendly and keeps getting over the chicken fence to sit on Mums doorstep!

I took one of my girls in to vet this morning, when I rang they were really happy to take a chicken in but when I actually saw the vet he couldn't really say much & mentioned an exotic specialist!

Apparently the only time they see chickens is when tens of them die on a farm & they need a post mortem..

Ridiculous

LOL - that is not the run, just the spare Eglu which never goes in the same place twice.

She was only in there for about 4 days before the "big girls" rushed mum as she was topping up her feed and all got in and chased her out. Since then she has enjoyed freedom every day with the rest of the flock but has been chased out each night as they have been put back in their run, hence she is still sleeping in the Eglu. Won't be longer than a few days now before she gets into the cube. As for how we still have grass, it's just scale - the garden is HUGE so even 12 chickens don't get to damage the lawn.
