Anyone know of a way to get rid of them, one was outside the run this morning and the hens made one hell of a noise, not sure everyone will be too pleased if that is a common early morning wake up call. Not a fan of cats as it is to be honest.

Hi Kev!

 

I shut my girls in the cube at night for the very reason....Oscar my tabby cat likes to sit on top of the run King of the Castle stylee and this used to get the girls going at about 6am! Although neighbours said it was not a problem it was for me!!!

 

You can buy sonic repellers from B&Q and I think they do some kind of pellet stuff but i am not sure of the content so maynot be suitable to sprinkle where your girls are.

 

Some folks advocate coffee grounds, blood meal, cayenne pepper, lavender oil, lemon grass oil, citronella oil, peppermint oil and eucalyptus oil. I use plant sparyer filled with water and a few drops of citronella and eucalyptus to keep the flies away but this also keeps Oscar out of the run.....screws up his face as soon as he goes near

 

Also there is a plant called Coleus Canina, also known as the "Pee-off plant" or the "Scaredy Cat" coleus which has been developed to deter cats. It releases a scent when they brush past that they don`t like. Perhaps put sone in a pot near the run? Not sure if it would stand up to the chooks though!

 

Finanlly Frosts at Brampton stock Lion Poo! the idea being that the scent from a larger more dominant cat will scare of the neighbourhood moggies. Not sure how smelly it is but may be worth a go!

ive got lion dung on the veg border and has worked really well for 2 years, the chickens are a few meters away from that, just had a look at the sonic things, do the chickens not get affected by it or is it just the cats, the cat in question is a young fiesty little thing, will sit in the road basically saying come on if you think your hard enough until you basically run it over, it was 7am this morning but we let them out as were up pretty early yesterday so not sure locking them in will make that much differance.

The other thing that I should of said is that if you let the girls out to free range they will claim the garden..........my three cats and six chooks share the garden.

 

When the chooks first arrived the cats were very interested in them.....after good while of supervised free ranging the cats became un-interested int he chooks and vice versa.

 

The only time there is commotion is when Fizz falls alseep sunbathing and Oscar the tabby sunbathes beside her. OSH goes into protective mode and BOK BOK BOKS!!! making oscar dash and Fizz jump up and BOK back

OH has just mentioned the Cat Scarecrow that we looked at.......it is a sensor that squirts water when it senses movement.....we didn`t bother with it as obviously we want OUR cats in the garden but maybe an option for you You would have to turn it off when the chooks are free ranging though.

All our neighbourhood cats, including my two hunters are scared witless of the chooks. I wouldn't mind, but I have bantams and miniatures.

Is this the first time your girls have seen the cat? If so they will get used to her quite quickly. I had a fox and her 3 cubs playing in the garden a couple of weeks ago, right outside their run and the chooks didn't even bat an eye lid.....however when they met my new guineas who were in their run you would have thought that the guineas were some sort of monsters, the chooks made a right song and dance about it lol!

yesterday morning was the first time they had seen the cat, it turned up this morning, little less noise and after id got rid they settled down quicker, cat turned up at 9am today which was better than 7am yesterday, hope mine settle down with the cat as they are quite loud when they get going, do you think it would make any difference if i borrowed a cat on a lead and just walked it around the cage for an hour? my mums looks very similar to the cat we have had in the garden.
