Quikchicken
Hi all, new to the forums. My wife and I have 5 bantam hens, and are considering the purchase of an Eglu. Omlet claims that up to 6 bantams can be housed in an Eglu, but I was wondering if you all would agree. Would 5 bantams be pushing it? Enough space for them to be comfortable and happy? Thanks in advance! Quikchicken
*mummy_hen*
I don't think it it the house that is the problem but the run space - would they be in the run as well or would they have a WIR?
Quikchicken
Hi Amy, thanks for the reply! We'd be keeping them in the run throughout the day, and they'd get an hour or two of free ranging once home from work (that's what we currently do). We have about an acre of lawn out in the country and would like to move them every day or two - the Eglu seems perfect for this. I was checking Omlet's video and photos, and had some concern about the size of the housing itself. Maybe it's a bit larger in person? Maybe I'm overestimating the need for space . . . I suppose they like to pack in there for comfort? Just want to make sure I'm not overcrowding my wonderful birds!
Egluntyne
I think 6 bantams will fit comfortably in the Eglu itself........it is the run that might need extending to give them room to get away from each other and avoid any bullying.
*mummy_hen*
I would say you would need at least the converter if not the extension as well to make sure they had plenty of milling about space, i personally think the eglu standard run would only be ok for short term use. Your garden sounds lovely and i forgot to say a big welcome to the forum The eglu is very easy to clean!! The cube would offer a bigger sleeping area If you were still worried about that and would be very easy to move around but i am not sure how bantams would cope with the ladder but i do think the eglu house would be plenty big enough for them. Quikchicken
Thanks so much for the replies, I'll check into the extension. Quikchicken
Daphne
I once had 5 polish bantams in an eglu with standard run. The eglu bit was fine but the run wasn't big enough and they started pecking. I got a converter and everything was OK - tho now they spend most of their time in a much larger pen behind netting. However, polands are pretty small bantams. ubereglu
Thanks so much for the replies, I'll check into the extension. Quikchicken You need to start with the convertor, as this evens out the slope of the run and then add an extension.
The Dogmother
I once had all 12 of my beauties insisting on sleeping in the elglu, and there was still room for more! As the others have said.... it's the run which restricts you.
