any ideas ?

Recommended Posts

My hens, but especially two of them are starting to get noticably bald under then chin and on their heads. It has been slowy happening since I got them, but yesterday, I really noticed it. The rest of their feathers look shiney and healthy, they are well in themselves etc. I check them over everyday and can't see any mites etc and have just powdered them in red mite powder and diatom. Any ideas ? They are starting to look abit scrawny !

I see this is a very old post, but wondered if the chickens might be reaching through a small vertical gap causing the top and chin feathers to get rubbed off???

sounds like a good idea ! but there are no small gaps that they could get thier head thru - the largest hole is the coop door and thats either open all day or closed all night, and the smallest hole is the wire mesh surround thier run, but that is too small ?

Guess I'll just keep an eye on it...at least they are well and not ill !

try changing or lowering their food try/grub, sounds like they are rubbing feathers when they are eating or drinking, move them lower or top up their food more regularly so they are not having to reach inside to get food.

I think this is what has been causing the problem ! I was sat watching them and when they were eating, I could see the bowl rubbing in the exact same spot as where they are going bold ! I put the bowls up higher as they were kicking their flooring into it, but i will have to lower them abit ! Thanks for that !
