Has anyone made their own wooden house?

Recommended Posts

We are in the process of making one but want to know what to preserve it with. We are building the house and a walk in run to house a second phase of chickens. It has been a great learning curve for the children who are in charge of the measuring and costing etc, which is the main reason for builing our own rather than buying one.

We are making it from exterior plywood and want to paint it inside and out to help in cleaning etc, but we are not sure if all forms of pain and wood preservative are safe for poultry?

I think most Cuprinol products are labelled as suitable for plants/pets

I have built a couple of houses that will need to be treated for winter and plan to use creosote replacement to keep the mites down but you have to keep the chooks out of the house for a few days to let the fumes go - I have no idea if its officially animal safe but many chicken people use it

Hello. I haven't built a house but did build a run extension from wood and wire mesh :) I was advised to use Cuprinol Timbercare Colour and Protects range ('pet safe'). My wooden house was already stained but I did paint it with a coat of Burgess marine Cle"Ooops, word censored!"aler which I can recommend as it makes it more water resistant.

I've used cuprinol wood stain too, I think, when converting our shed. I also used exterior grade gloss in the section the girls roost in (In the squitty poo line of fire) and their nest box to make it easier to scrub. I did not have my girls then, so it was at least a week before they went in. so fumes weren't an issue. I've also put lino cushion flooring down in the whole shed (Offcut of about £15) which also makes s"Ooops, word censored!"ing a stubborn poop a lot easier

I have heard that rubberised paint is good for the insde of a coop as it is easy to clean and fills all the cracks in

I would imagine that if applied to a clean dry sound surface gloss paint or varnish would be very easy to scrub clean though
