Community orchard

Recommended Posts

Just had a leaflet through my door from the local man who knows & does everything (every village has one!), about a new scheme for a community orchard.

Its already a well established orchard owned by the estate house who own a lot of the land around my village, & for £10 a year I get a share of the crops which include heritage apples, plums, cherries, quince, pears & mulberries.

there will also be special events for share holders like an autumn apple day.

I think it sounds great & have signed up, which is most unlike me because I tend to avoid 'villagey' things :?

Has anyone else got a scheme like this in their village or town?

Sounds excellent - I'd have joined too!

Our local organic farm has a veg garden with a similar scheme, you buy a share in the garden and get a weekly share of the produce.

Sadly it costs a lot more than £10 - closer to £20 per week, paid up front, which is a shame as the initial outlay put us off joining. Also we would probably have needed a double share to make sure we had enough veg, and laying out that amount of money in one go just wasn't an option for us.

Now if we could pay weekly or monthly, I'd have joined in a flash. But charging up front allows them to budget for the year and pay the gardener, so at the moment they can't change it.
