Sexing Lavender Araucanas

Recommended Posts

Do you know what the article said about reddness of the comb by any chance please?

My two 10 week olds both have pretty red but small combs hence my conclusion that they are boys but I'd hate to make a mistake.... One is redder than the other and crowing whereas the other isn't. It's really difficult to tell by plumage at this stage so no clues there either.

I have two 13 week old lavender bantams (bought at 10 weeks) and thought one may be a male so e-mailed Jason at Archieslittlegems for advice as he is very up on Araucanas and is one of only three breeders recognised on the Araucana club website. I have pasted his reply below if it helps anyone.

"I don't mind you emailing at all, we are always only to pleased to help. Araucana's are funny birds, sometimes you can tell the sex from only a couple of weeks old yet other birds can be three months before any signs start to show, A cock birds comb can come at any age upto 20 weeks but there are other differences that you can look for, the saddle feathers will be longer as will the tail, the neck hackles will be thicker, the way the bird holds itself will be much different the cock birds stand more upright with their chests more pronounced, the cocks are very much bigger than the hens and they may shown more 'balding' on the face than the hen, I do have some cock birds with only a slight comb so you can't always tell by comb alone."

Good luck!
