Right, as well predicted, chicken rustlers tend to go for the rarer breeds.

According to the link (above) this can include Orpingtons, Welsummers and Marans which can sell for quite a high price on the black market.

 

Why these sickos would want to steal chikens, i really don't know.

 

So make sure that your girls and roos are secure when in their enclosure or/and free ranging.

 

IF you do have your chooks stolen, ensure that you IMMEDIATELY report it to the police.

 

Chicken rustlers sometimes steal small numbers of chickens because they think that they will not be reported for such a crime. SO REPORT THEM AND PROVE THEM WRONG!!!

 

Remember, thieves can be prosecuted for:

1.) Breaking and entering.

2.)Theft.

I know someone near here (Abingdon) who has just lost a Welsummer cockerel to thieves - plus the coop he was in. She said it was as though they had been beamed up by a space ship as there was no sign of how they had got in or got out!

But your average back garden bird doesnt cost £100 and the breeds mentioned arent that rare!

 

Yes there have been thefts of poultry and I am not taking this lightly however to me this is media scaremongering at its best

I agree, there are rarer breeds than what is mentioned in the article.

But the chooks that are mentioned could be targeted in some repects for their egg laying reputation, i dont know.

 

Didnt mean to scare anybody, so im sorry if i did, i just linked the article beacuse i thought that some people would find it useful.

 

But really, the key message im trying to get out is to make sure that your girls and roos are as safe as possible.

Chicken thefts have certainly become a lot more common this year. It's always wise to up your security if possible in these times of chook craziness. People seem to think stealing is easier than buying .
