poppy33
Hi can anyone who owns cream legbars tell me if they are escapers I am very tempted to buy a couple to add to my Sussex, bovan and little ginger thing!! its the green/blue eggs that are attracting me. I have looked on the breed section and noticed the comments that they are flighty possibly difficult to handle and someone has mentioned them flying and escaping even with clipped wings My three girls dont attempt to flap up on to anything, so thats a concern if I did choose that breed. Anyone out there with experience of this breed I would welcome your thoughts on them. They would be kept in a WIR and free ranged most days. manu thanks
Redwing
I have two legbars (not cream ones alas) and they are quite flighty and flap towards the door when it is opened but not fast enough to get out, they are hard to catch too but very docile once caught I always wait by the run until they are furthest away from the door then open it (its an Eglu run) If you clip their wings you should be able to keep ahead of their antics Personally I wouldnt free range mine as they would be in the next county before I knew it but then all chckens are different and someone will be along in a minute to tell you how calm theirs is
poppy33
Thanks Redwing, I think they probably are going to be out of the question as I have lots of trees and I think they may flap up and escape, its a shame because they are so pretty and the eggs look such a nice colour. I saw a lovely picture of someones Apenzneller ( not sure if thats how you spell it I fancied one of them ...then read the breed profile why are all the pretty ones good at escapinh !!! stoice
I don't have one but I heart after a lavender araucana. Pretty 'blue' grey birds that lay blue eggs. Don't know if they're flighty either but I'm sure someone on here can advise. http://www.rarebreedpoultry.net/lavender-araucana
TOMWARDFARM
I cant speak for other people but I have Friesans, leghorns, white leghorns, cream legbars and columbines. All at a young age are like little road runners and are extremely quick on their feet. I found them a challenge as everyone I spoke to said they are extremely flighty and will never calm down. I have a 6' fence on 3 sides and a 3' fence to the frnt of my walk in run, I have had all the above free reanging since about 10 weeks old, the only issue I have had is when it went dark and we hadn't put the chooks up 1 of the Columbines went into one of my hedges, she soon come down in the morning. I have had reports that friesans have flown off in the past but if you clip their wings you shouldnt have a problem, I have a 12 week old Cream Legbar, Leghorn, Friesan and Araucana/Leghorns none of them have their wings clipped and they never venture over the 3' fence to find greenery. Don't ever be detered at trying new breeds.

LJ's Chooks
Our Cream Legbar is like Houdini, can escape the impossible... every day she would hop over the fence to play with our chicks, and will regularly jump the main fence too... normally when we have visitors ... you can normally time her .... Oh you have chickens, how wonderful.... and over she comes, cant hear us from the back door, but will hop over and come running just to see what's for tea!!! She has her wings clipped and... Oh I'd better be quiet she is probably listening in and will be over that fence in a flash!!! We have a 5ish foot fence and sneaks under the gate or between the post and gate... she is very crafty, but GORGEOUS!!! As long as you have a ready supply of sweetcorn she'll normally head back in to be told off by the other girls. Dont let it put you off... just be on your toes, they are gorgeous girls! Tallulah is a drama queen, runs - not flaps - everywhere and is by far the greediest. Just the sight of me approaching with a handful of corn is enough to make her postpone all thoughts of escaping - for now, anyway.
ubereglu
I have a cream legbar and she's a complete monkey, she's lovely all the same, but can do VERY big power jumps!
Milly
MY Cream Legbar has never tried to escape. But the Gold Legbar is a real menace - she is 2 years old (so should have settled down a bit). We clipped her wing, which made no difference, so tried clipping the other one, to give her less lift. Which made no difference either. So I think it very much depends on the chicken!
