help needed

Recommended Posts

Well i spoke to the vet and as the others are fine and i have ordered some coxoid, to be safe, she thinks that it is best just to keep an eye on the others and if anymore get unwell and pass away then a post mortem should be done.

So sorry to hear about your chick :(

I've been given the following advice from a long term poultry keeper and breeder to avoid cocci. Give them all ACV in their water from day one and make sure their litter and area is kept dry and poo free. Also try to let them have as much fresh air as possible.

Mine are on an area where other chickens have been but we cleaned it all up, used Stalosan and again on advcie I've put turf down in their area. Am touching wood that we've done enough.

Hope your others are OK and that mine and everyone elses stay healthy.

Helps if you add your message before pressing submit

Anne, do you use medicated crumb?

I was told yesterday that medicated can't be used for meat birds....any boys we get will probably end up in the pot unless someone takes them off our hands which is unlikely! As I've got Lt Sussex, I won't know until they are quite big what they are, so would either need to use medicated or not from the word go & wait & see....if that makes sense!!

I'm going in later today to replace the hemcore in the run..which was only replaced when mum went in there 10 days or so ago & will give a liberal dose of stalosan...and keep my fingers crossed!! I put extra cover over the top to make it more waterproof this morning whilst Buffie was off having her constitutional, & will add a windbreak to provide a bit more shade later.....I feel as though I'm nesting :anxious::lol:

Sha, they are on medicated as it was the only type I could get. Also, as far as I know withdrawal time for the medicated crumb is one week although I have seen that some brands only say one day. I think we've two cockerels so we've to decide what to do. I'm going to investigate cockerel boxes as I think we will be allowed to keep a cockerel as long as it's quiet from 11.00pm to 8.00am. Need to check with our council.

cockerel boxes??? what are they??? :?

Sorry to hear about your little boy ross :(

Tom

It's a special box you pop them into over night. They don't have the room to throw their head back and crow. There's ventilation though of course :)

Ooo I'll have a look at them

Do you get them from your council :?

Tom

No unfortunately :( I know there's someone on Practical Poultry who makes them and someone else had posted a picture of one they'd built over the perch that looked good.
