Telemachus
I have three kids and wanted to buy three gp's. Young lady at pet shop told me I would have to buy either two or four and that if I bought three the weakest one would get pushed around by the other two. I asked her if this was because gp's have an issue with odd numbers, whereupon she thought I was being facetious and walked off. I actually wasn't, I'm afraid I don't know anything about gp's apart from my kids have been rattling on about them for ages. Would be grateful for any insight on whether three gp's can live together in a peaceful state. Also, I have bought one of these plastic eglu cages to keep in the garden, should we also buy a bed thing for them to go in.
Yolky
If you want more than 2 then you will need to get girls as boys tend to only be able to live in pairs (and sometimes they don't even want to do that lol) but you can have 3 girls. I haven't heard of anyone with three girls guineas who have one left out. I would try a rescue centre, you could find three already bonded girlies. I would avoid that pet shop. Lewis
Yep, I'd have a look at a rescue or a local breeder, they're more likely to be tamer animals for the children
missuscluck
Hi I have 3 girl guineas. They are fine together. I would say that Summer is generaly the quietest of the three but I havnt noticed any bullying. I would have thought no matter how many guineas you have one is bound to be at the bottom of the pecking order.
sophia_chicken
We have a male and two females who are very happy. Three sisters are likely to be very happy together as well. Care should be given introducing neutered males to females though.... they might well bully him because he doesn't smell male enough..... jam
Hi I have seven guinea pigs and a few years ago i had eleven. I can see where the whole 'dont keep odd numbers of guineas together' comes from and when guineas fight its not pretty, but from my experience having odd numbers together has never been a problem. I have three girls together at the moment and they get along fine, sometimes they even get together with my other two girl guineas at the weekend when I clean the hutches out and they get along fine too. It would be a good idea to get girls because boys have a strong tendancy to fight, even if they are related, which i know about all too well!! Also when buying your guineas, whether its from a farm, pet shop or animal shelter make sure that your all your girls really are girls and that they're not pregnant when you buy them. Believe it or not I did originally have 2 girls, but was very suprised when i walked up the garden one day and found 5 little balls of fluff running around the hutch!! Good luck with your new guinea pigs. They make the best family pets and at a very convenient size!!
cavysqueak
I had a Mum, a daughter and a neutered male who lived together happily for many years. My sister had four girls and a neutered male living together and they were also fine. I would also suggest getting three girls, as they seem to have less problems living togther than multiple males. Also if they are siblings they will get on better. Good luck! Guinea's make great pets and I love the sounds they make!
3happyhens
We have 3 boys. We got 2 baby brothers (Malcolm & Martin) last summer to keep Jools company when his brother died. Jools is a bit of a bully sometimes, but no real nastiness & the other two hold their own against him very well. Kate
