Is there an orthodontist in the house???

Recommended Posts

yes thanks Indie, I am definately getting a second opinion as everyone I ahve spoken to about Implants (except olly) :) has said they are painful, and that they are not even guaranteed to work (something about jaw bone density) so the second opinion with a fresh set of eyes on it will be good I think.

Thanks Sam, yes I would have taken my son privately but I was quoted about £6000 for his entire treatment  and well that was a little too much at the time, and to be honest the nhs wait wasn't too long. :)

CM dont pay for this as it is the equivalent of having a hip replacement done..not much in it really!! NHS will sort it out glad you can get it done on NHS they are usually good with children and if it needs to be done they will do the best.

Try ringing Royal London as they definitely have the school of dentistry on site , you could jump on train to kings x etc I know they have a big dental dept.

Not sure if Addenbrookes has dental facility? nearer?

I have my NHS dentist who I went back to but the new one we had in our area was just interested in cosmetics and ££££.

Hope it goes well..at least you have some options to sort it out

Morning All

I had 3 years of orthodontics at Eastmans dental hospital in Grays Inn Road, (about 28 years ago!!). My top teeth were so far forward that the dentist (Mrs Horrocks - that name will stay with me forever) took photos and took them 'on tour' to America! :o

She gave me headgear, which was an anchor on each molar at the back on both sides and the headgear plugged in them. Wore it every day after school and all night for about 9 months. She then gave me the railway tracks on both upper and lower, plus new headgear set on different teeth in order to continue pulling the teeth backwards whilst they straightened.

Took 3 long years of visiting Mrs Horrocks once a month for tightening, changing. The only boob I feel she made is to try and straighten my bottom row of teeth without removing one last tooth (had 3 out at the bottom and 5 at the top in total), hence it went back wonky and has stayed there. Had she removed the last tooth, there would have been room for all.

Implants are painful apparently, brother has one and my one crown hurt enough, but I am a wuss. :D Good luck, if I had some money I would get the last tooth straightened and have them whitened, was quoted approx £3000.............. :shameonu:

Hey

Judging by what you said the implants won't be free? I don't think they will be if that is the case they will cost a fortune and not every one can have them they are attached to the jaw bone so as with everything like that they don't always work. If he has to have a bridge at the age he is now the chances are he will have to have it replaced becuase they aren't that secure and most teenagers are quite active :).

Anyway i have had somthing similar (from what i would understand) i had overcrowding at the front and they had to take out back teeth and move the front ones round towards the back of my mouth. I hated it and it hurt alot. However that part compared to the years of braces and retainers didn't take that long.

From what i have seen of bridges and what i know of implants i wouldn't go for these personally unless there was no other option. Also your sons going to be going through alot of dentistry and he'd probably be happier with what he wants.

If your not happy with the orthodontist get another opinion i didn't and i didn't with my dentist and as such i got pulled around and stuff done if hurry that shouldn't have been and i went through alot more pain than i needed to

Well... outscome of todays visit to my sons dentist has resulted in us moving my son to their inhouse orthodontist at the practice (we wasn't patients there when my son first saw his current ortho so this wasn't an option) as it will be SO much easier getting him there for appointments.

I feel much happier having discussed the options with his dentist and she agrees with me that although my sons case is quite severe, bridge and inplants is a big undertaking and if there is another alternative then that should be considered. She agrees that the second option that my son wants is better for him (I could have kissed her at this point) and said that his wishes should be honored and has referred his case to her Ortho.

We are booked in to see their ortho as soon as they can and they said they will waste no time in getting his appliances fitted and the ball rolling for him. :) The Ortho Nurse was lovely and spoke to me for a while about his case, bless her.

I called his current ortho and explained and they are sending me over his xrays. So I think we are more sest with the way forward now, they estimate we should see the ortho in October so not that long to wait. :D

Thanks for all your adivce everyone. xx

Am glad that you have sorted it out to your and your son's satisfaction.

It must be a huge relief for you. :D

yes it is, a huge relief :D Yes a much better plan for him.

We had some good news too that YS doesn't need a brace as first thought, his teeth have moved and aligned themselves nicely he only has a slight minor tilt to his front tooth and if he wants that sorting it will be probably be private but he's happy and almost leapt out of her chair..:lol:
