Friends For Sausage.

Recommended Posts

Three weeks ago I started off with 12 Salmon Faverolle eggs in the incy. 6 were clear. 1 looked a bit iffy but the others were all doing well until we had a power cut late last Thursday for almost five hours. One brave little warrior hatched on it's due date early on Wednesday. Georgia has called it Sausage. I left it in the incy until last night, hoping against hope that it wasn't the sole survivor. One other egg was cheeping so I hoped Sausage might be lucky enough to have one friend at least. I took Sausage out last night and put it in the brooder, poor little love was very distressed, all on it's own but it eventually settled down for the night.

I candled the cheeping egg last night and it had pipped internally but hadn't made any more progress. I made a tiny hole in the shell to help it's breathing before popping it back in the incy. I'd first heard it cheeping on Tuesday so it had been trying to hatch for some time. This morning it had made no progress and was sounding distressed so I helped it out. It's not looking too promising. It wouldn't have hatched, there's probably a good reason for that, but I've given it a chance. I hope it gains in strength and is then able to join Sausage.

Worried about Sausage being on it's own, this morning we've been to The Birdhaus near Brackley and bought four little friends. They're a couple of days older but already Sausage is feeling a lot happier and looks very settled. Luci at Birdhaus is lovely, so are her birds! She thinks she's very good at sexing chicks and thinks she's given us four girls. Time will tell!

Nymphadora  Named by Daisy. Poor thing. I'll encourage the name Dora instead! Dora is a frizzle Silkie, black with gold bits at the moment:

An as yet un-named blue frizzle Silkie:

Custard, a black mottled Pekin:

Hob"Ooops, word censored!", an odd coloured Pekin, I think this ones a frizzle too:

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that my other little Faverolle gets to join them

We called the poorly Fav Beans. She started to improve a little yesterday afternoon. She spent some time sat in my bra, head poking over the top of my t-shirt, watching events in the garden for a while. She was very sleepy. This morning she looked heaps better, had gained strength and although still very poorly managed to drink and consented to a few bits of chick crumb. I was working today but kept popping home every few hours to feed and water her. When I came back at 4.30pm she'd gone downhill fast. felt very cold and was barely breathing. I helped her on her way  I had to go back to work in floods of tears, my colleague went home and I was stuck there all on my own until 9.30pm. I've spent most of the evening crying for poor little Beans. We tried so hard together and one afternoon in the sun just isn't enough

I'm so gutted she never got to join Sausage but glad I got some new friends for Sausage yesterday. I would've hated for Sausage to spend the next few weeks alone. They're all doing brilliantly.
