Frontline Spoton and hairloss in cats?

Recommended Posts

I took our 2 mogs to the vets for their booster jabs this morning and while I was there the vet recommended this treatment for fleas saying it was a bad year and the cattery might isist on it. I wasn't aware that they had any but she swears that there were some there.

This evening Scamp has scratched a bald patch in the back of her neck where the treatment was applied, she has not constantly been at it it must have been one big sctratch and we found a chunk of fur on the floor  . OH has since remembered that when we got Ziggy she had bare patches on the back of her neck and they wondered then if it was flea treatment that had done it. I am sure that they have had the other spot on treatment since which I can't remeber the name of offhand.

Upto now Ziggy has left her neck alone, we have tried to clean their fur a bit and will ring the vets in the morning.

Anyone else got experience of this?

Thanks for that. I have had a peek on the internet and it is mentioned as a rare side effect. they are cudled up asleep in the radiator bed at the moment with no further problems.

We had to wash Scamp's back paws because she was licking them and gagging because of the bad taste on them from scratching her neck.

We've had that a bit. Cleo is so stinkingly allergic to fleas, that I use frontline spray on her at the moment (we have it in for kittens) to make sure I get them all. She doesn't like it, but she doesn't go at it like the others go at the spot on stuff.

It's a rotten year for fleas though, I only did ours about three weeks ago and they've all gotten little fleas already. Including the kittens. GRRR.

We didn't experience fur loss when we used Frontline Spot on

But when our cats had the booster jab they both suffered with fur loss  same with our border collie, she was that bad after having her jab we were considering getting her PTS (she had stopped eating, drinking & kept wetting herself, She's fine now though :D ) maybe that could have caused fur loss in your cat  (it made them all very itchy too)

I know it sounds bad but we don't bother getting our cats/dogs vaccinated now, My uncle has a 20yr old Border Terrier X and she's never been vaccinated.

Marmite used to get a bald patch after flea treatment if it was applied at the same time as she had a jab. I think it was the combination; when the flea spot-on was given at a different time she left it alone and was fine - I suspect it was itchy or stung around the injection site.

We switched later to Stronghold spot-on to treat worms as well, and never had a problem using that - it may be worth discussing alternative flea treatments with your vet?

One of our cats became sensitive to the Frontline spot-on treatment at the same time he developed kidney disease (possibly a coincidence) - he developed thinning hair exactly where we applied the treatment at the back of his head and between his shoulder blades. However, he's fine with the Stronghold spot-on treatment and doesn't experience any hair thinning/baldness or irritation with it. And despite chronic kidney disease he's still with us 7 years later, and is still top cat locally!

Thanks for your replies. :D

Scamp had largely left the area alone until last night and she has made it worse now and has a weeping sore area now betweeen the size of a 1p and 2p piece. I rang the vets this morning and I am taking her in at 11.15am. I am not really sure what they can do to stop her, she is not constantly scratching at it but obviously when she does she really goes for it, we have not actually seen her doing it.

My OH is really annoyed he says that he not aware of them having fleas and that I was railroaded into it. He doesn't even know how much it cost yet but I am hoping to get a partial refund for the remaining doses in the pack. He also says that he keeps his children away from pesticides by growing our own veg. so doesn't like the idea of them coming into the house on the cats.

My old cat was always fine with Stronghold too and these 2 had the remaining doses from a pack that I had left from her about 6 months after we got them and they were fine too.

The comment about the jabs and frontline combination is interesting I hadn't thought of that.

We took her to the vet on Friday morning and she said that it was a reactionto the Frontline and said that she had only seen one other case in her 10 years as a vet.

She rang the company that makes it and filled in a form reporting the reaction. I should be getting a refund on the Frontline and any treatment that Scamp needs will be paid for by the pharaceutical company.

She has given her a antibiotic cream that has a steriod in it too. This worked well on friday and Saturday but by yesterday whe was scratching again. i have left the cream this morning because it tis nice and dry and she has left it alone. Each time I have applied the cream it has annoyed her and made her scratch. I am keeping an eye on her today and if she scratches the scabs she will be back to the vet tomorrow.
