No the chooks are still laying!

 

OH & I were just downstairs in the lounge and heard an almighty bang from upstairs - at first we thought Isabelle had fallen from her cot (heaven knows how unless she has escapologist traits!) so we both ran up to her nursery hearts thumping only to find her asleep. PHEW

 

We went into the guest bedroom to find that a wood pigeon had hit the window whilst in full flight The poor little thing was lying on its back, very shocked and shaking. Me, being the soft hearted fool, climbed out onto the roof and popped it back on its feet and away from the edge so it had time to gather itself but it is still there nearly an hour later. Its breathing is calmer and it has walked to the edge of the roof but there it has remained.

 

Is there anything i should do for it or will it just gather itself and fly off in its own time?

poor thing, I'm not sure what the best thing to do is, maybe just give it some more time to see if it goes of it's own accord. Have you tried giving it some water?

I would just leave it to gather itself. It is probably in shock and may take a while to recover. Handling it will stress it and set it's recovery back. We have many pigeon 'splat' shapes on our windows at one side of the house which seems to be in their main training flight path

I would say definitely leave it alone. If it is still there in the morning, you may have to think again. But for now, it will sort itself out in its own time.

They seem to like our small bathroom window for some reason I keep finding them comatose on the back step. Providing the chooks don't find them first ( ) they seem to recover eventually and fly/wander off. One hit the windscreen of the van in front of us last week - poor van driver nearly swerved off the road, feathers exploded everywhere and the pigeon just flew off

Have him for dinner! It might have internal injuries, but sounds like it won't be there by morning.

Quick update!

 

After deciding to throw a towel over him/her and then pop into a box with water and food I got up to the roof to find said birdie had moved about 4 metres. I assumed this was a good sign so left him/her alone.

 

I went out a while later to find he/she had flown into a tree near to the roof and is perched there.

 

I do hope the little birdie makes it

 

I have now shut the guest bedroom curtains in the hope that no more birdies decide to try and fly through the glass!

Thats good news - they do seem to be tough little things!

Don't count on the curtains working though - our bathroom window has opaque patterned glass and they still hit it. Maybe it's an inherited flight path gene - it was only added to the house 20 years ago so maybe they haven't inherited the avoidance gene yet

Any window sticker placed on the outside of the glass will stop bird strikes as it will enable the birds to see the glass - the sticker must be on the outside, not the inside for it to work though. The RSPB have some cute bird/butterfly designs for sale in their online shop, but any freebie charity one will do the job as effectively!
