quickcluck
I know this is a silly question. But there have been many threads lately about these little blighters and sadly a few deaths. I was wondering how do you get them? I know they dont live on chooks, so it's unlikely that and new chooks arrive with them, but they have to come from somewhere...... Anyone know? Woodcat
hey They are little blighters. The only time i ever get them was when i first got chickens. I got them litteral from the first day twas a nightmare for a newbie. Mine were barn reared hybrids so i think the only way they could have come that quickly was if they had some on when they arrived. What is most irritating is that it probably was only one or two but within two days we were crawling in them.( house was new never had any chicks in so can't have been there already) I belive the other way they can get them is through wild birds though i wouldn't swear to that one though i'm not 100% sure where i got that information from if you see what i mean. xScrunchee
This article has some useful information about red mites. Excellent article. Thank you I will continue to spray the inside of my Eglu with Raid (in the red can) every couple of months as it hasn't harmed the girls at all and I have no lice/mite problems. One spray lasts for up to 6 weeks and it leaves an invisible barrier which kills all crawling insects any time they walk/crawl over it Cheap too

xScrunchee
Excellent article!!! Very interesting scrunchie, where did you find out about that? Well, I read the ingredients and discovered that it has the same active ingredient as ant powder (Which people use directly on their hens). It says on the can that it can be used in kitchens, hotels, schools etc so in my opinion it cannot be that bad. I would not spray it on my girls but I do use it in their house. It gets right into every nook and crannie but does smell a bit fumey. I sprayed their Eglu in the morning after taking it apart to clean it and then left it to dry out all day. For 2 nights I left their Eglu door open simply because I could still smell it a bit but after that there was no smell. Being that it only needs doing every 6 weeks or so, I think it's brilliant My girls are fine and there are no mites in their Eglu at all
