Poultry breeders

Thanks everyone - I'll have a look at those.

We're picking up some ex-bats (our first hens) next week, but I think in the long run I'd like a couple of reliable layers, so that's my next birthday sorted!

I love the look of the Light Sussex, but would be happy with Warrens for the eggs and apparent placidity :D

eta - just had a look at the Devon Trad breeds site ... goodness me, what a price! :o

I have 3 Sussexes, a Light, Silver and Buff. They are lovely and mix very well with my Maran and Barnevelder. Good layers and calm hens.

The reason the breeds are so expensive (in relation to others) is that that are pure breeds and live longer (in theory)

Good luck with your new arrivals.

Edit - They are expensive :lol:

Pure breed hens do live longer and produce less eggs per year than hybrids but for more years

If you are looking for three hens (for example) then I personally believe that £120 is a small price to pay for productive pets that live for some years

You also ahve to look at the quality of stock, advice given and back up if things go wrong so price should not be the only decision driver

Thanks for that link - looks good. When are you getting yours?

In about a months time, after our holiday, dont want the hassel of asking friends/family to look after them or miss the first eggs!!!

the suspense is a killer though..

I know that feeling - we decided back in June that we'd get them, but had to wait until after our summer holiday for the same reason ... and then there was another 4 weeks before BHWT had some in our area!

Only 10 days now ... and I'm already planning what chickens to have next!

Can anyone recommend a supplier in the Gloucester area - I've tried Fosters poultry in Gloucester and was told "we don't sell to people with Eglu's because we don't like them, they don't have a perch and most other suppliers don't like them either!!". I'm looking for two new girls and I'm a bit stuck now!

Good news - I'm now the proud Mummy of two lovely new girls, a Light Sussex (named Ramona) and a Bluebell Maran (named Beatrice). Both from Annie Hall's poultry http://www.anniehallspoultry.co.uk/ which I can highly recommend. She's based in Bristol and has a fantastic selection of chickens and ducks! She's got a very good shop too and is very knowledgable and approachable.
