1) It seems that Patsy and Eddy don't like sweetcorn - neither kernels nor on the cob They do love dried mealworms though! I received a sample packet with something I purchased and it burst in my pocket - lovely I am now giving the girls the crumbly bits in the corners of my pocket Will they learn to love sweetcorn do you think?

 

2) They are not putting themselves to bed yet - I've had them for 3 nights. I don't get home from work till around 10pm, and every night so far they have been snuggled together in a corner of their run (covered). I have been picking them up and putting them into their house each night. Their food and water is in the house (to make food spillage easy to clean up) and they hop in and out of the house during the day to help themselves to pellets and water so I know they don't mind going in there.

 

Today is my first day off since Patsy and Eddy arrived so I am enjoying getting to know them better!

Try putting a torch in the eglu ( lit of course!) and talk to them to wake them rather than pick them up. Hopefully, they will toddle off to the eglu. Once they get the idea, they should go in automatically.

 

Also, do you have a light from the house shining on the eglu and run? We find this encourages ours to stay out longer. So if you do, maybe sit in the dark until they get the idea???

They won't like sweetcorn particularly due to the age they are. Growers are better off not having so many treats as they need to have a balanced diet so they grow properly. They tend to only like corn and things when they've come into lay.

I have a torch and will try waking them up instead of picking them up - thanks! I do tend to leave the light on when I'm out at work and it does shine into the garden rather - I will turn it off tonight and see what happens.

 

Thanks for explaining about the corn - I will save my money until they are big(ger)!

My growers go mad for mealworms, just like the big girls do As regards to bedtime, you must remember chickens are very very stupid. Physically put them to bed every night and soon they'll catch on and do it themselves. It's taken nearly two weeks for my thicko Brahmas to figure out the new coop is where they should sleep

Two weeks?OK I'm clearly way ahead of my chickens. I will be patient Today I picked them both up and gave them mealworms from my hand before putting them back in their run. The hard bit was putting one back without letting the other one charge out at the same time! They are funny. I can't wait until they are big enough to free-range. I think that will have to wait at least until can they go to bed by themselves!

 

Today I thought Eddy had horrible lumpy growths on her feet. When I picked her up I discovered they were sprouting feathers Talk about neurotic mother! I checked their skin and it was lovely and pink and clean looking under their feathers.

Well I guess MY chikkies must be super intelligent. They have just put themselves to bed! I've taken the opportunity to give the run a good hose out rather than leaving it to the morning. What good little girls!

Well if they've got brains you'd better watch out because they'll be up to all sorts next My brainiest chickens are my naughtiest ones! The nicebutdim Brahmas are obviously angelic
