I've just started harvesting our annual runner bean glut! Eating lots, but there are always too many! I do freeze some, but was wondering whether or not the actual beans can be used in anything, or is it just the pods? Are they the kind of beans you can dry and use in winter stews etc? I've grown the scarlet emperor variety.

When I've had enough I leave the beans to grow and make seed for next year - or use as dried beans.

Lesley, when you say dried beans - what does that mean That I can dry them and use in stews? I've never done this before and I keep thinking there must be something else to it!

If all else fails it is chutney time!

I mostly use them as seed for the following year - but I have used the beans seeds when they are sort of dry - half way to being as dry as seed - I added them to mince and onions or spag bol.
