Sarah died just under a month ago and Tilly became ill 10 days ago - similar symptoms - runny poos and quite depressed not her usual happy, mischievious self but she was still eating and drinking, still scratching and pecking abeit not as enthusiastically as before but yesterday I found her down the garden sitting all alone and her comb was tinged blue. I brought her inside and put her in a nice clean box with fresh straw all nice and cosy but this morning I've found her dead.

When Sarah died I thought that it might have been coccidosis so I bought some coxoid and treated them with that, they've been wormed 2 months ago - I know that I should have taken her to the vet who is excellent with our cat but had previously said when I asked him if he would see the girls if they became ill, that the only thing to do when chickens get ill is to wring their necks!! so I've avoided him. I'm so scared now that whatever is wrong will go through them all. I will go to the vet if anything happens to the others and hopefully he'll help but in the meantime I feel so guilty and so upset. We've just bought a cube as we thought that the wooden house might be the cause of problems but it was always cleaned and treated with poultry shield and red mite powder and the girls were treated regularly with red mite powder.

How long do chickens live? they were 2 1/2 - do you think it was their time?

I'm so upset - advice please

Thats so sad. I wound'nt blame yourself though sometimes there is nothing we can do, as much as we look after our pets they will always reach a time when they may become ill and pass away before we have had time to do anything. Could you maybe contact a breeder and explain the symptoms, they may have come across the same problem with one of their chickens x

I'm so sorry to hear your news. I wouldn't have gone to that vet either. I think if she had caught an infection from your other girl it would have shown a lot earlier and she had runny poo but I understand if it coccidiasis they also have blood in their poo.

Hugs to you, it's horribe to lose one and must be so much worse to lose another. x
