little jerry
Has anyone got any good ideas on how to best treat lice. Picked the two chickens up yesterday and gave them a good checking over. They were both crawling with small reddish beasties. At first thought it might be red mite and powdered them all over, but on reading up on it, I think it is more likely to be lice. The advice out there on the web is a bit out of my depth. I need advice about how to treat two wee pets, not a whole flock. any help will be much appreciated. Feel itchy just thinking about this. hillfamily
I would try using Johnson's Anti-Mite Spray, available from pet suppliers, which treats lice and mites. It's easy to apply (although wear old clothing as it stinks a bit) and I have found that it worked well on one of my girls that had lice last year. I'm sure someone else will be along soon with some other suggests...I now there are other products you can use but my brain is a bit frazzled this evening and I cannot for the life of me remember what they are Also just to let you know, you accidently posted this topic twice so I have deleted one of them for you
Chook n Boo Mum
I used Frontline for cats which isn't licensed for chooks but worked brilliantly when my original 3 had lice last summer. It has a week (I think?) of egg withdrawal which is a bit of a horror if you've just started to get eggies from your girls!! Sha x
Kit
I have frontline in the cat cupboard, do I empty the whole sachet on each hen? I have picked my girls up but can't see any critters but they all seem to be losing feathers from the ir undercarriage. They are 12mths old so I think they are too young to be moulting and I have seen specks of red/brown dots on my eglu door which I think is blood. thanks
Chook n Boo Mum
I used one of the little containers between 3 of them, a dot on the base of the neck & one at the base of the tail, and the empty ampule (?) in the poo tray under the roosting bars. I'm not sure if this was the right amount, but it worked for my girls Sha x
Snowy
Definitely try the frontline as that zaps anything that tries to eat your girlies. Also give your housing a good dousing with poultryshield and/or total mite kill just be on the safe side. I had red mite transported in on a chicken, so it is feasible that that is what they were.
