Moving house - can i keep girls in eglu?

Recommended Posts

We have moved 6 bantams in their (green eglu). It was a two hour journey and they all arrived safely.

The eglu with the door shut it quite dark so they should all doze off. We removed the roosting bars and added a fair bit of straw to give them a but of stability.

It is a tad difficult to get the eglu in and out of the van as one piece (but I am only small) so I moved them into cat box, put eglu in van then put chooks in eglu. reversed this at the other end.

BUT i am sure a box would do just as well providing you have ventilation holes. In fact i prefer a cardboard box to a cat box as it is darker.

I use a carrier as it is smaller and I am happy they cannot escape - in the eglu you have to take the lid off to detach the run and re-fix it and it is more difficuly to get in the car carefully with girls inside that you cannot see. I took some of my girls in pet carriers and transferred them to the Eglu at a show last Saturday afternoon, then just popped them back in the pet carriers for the journey home. I think they forgot they had ever been away after 10 mins back in the cube. They were quite happy on the passenger seat in the carrier with some sweetcorn to munch on and watching me driving.
