my poor unwell hen bum....

Recommended Posts

Hey

1 of our hens was acting really quite and wouldnt really move around and spent alot of time sitting down. Found her like this on tues, so brought her in & put in box with hay etc as others was pecking at her. Was hoping that she wouldnt die as 1 other one died the day before. Thrt she prob ate something as we are very newbie about hens. put her back out the next day & only to nocited egg stuck in her bum, like you can see the egg but cant get it out. so left it & see if she passes it herself. next morning, it was still there so brought her back in and rung vet who said put her in box and put a hot waterbottle under her which i did & put vac around the egg/bum. she seemed to be in pain etc. made me soo sad!! then yay later on that night she passed the stuck egg and another one that was really soft shelled one. she seem much happier and perker, shes still here in the bigger box so she can move around more. shes eating etc but her bum is not looking very good at all. got yucky stuff, could be poops. its kinda leaking. it looked like it kinda been turned inside out at the start of it. its still pretty streached open due egg being stuck there. i dont kno what to do about it???

I would bathe it gently and try to keep it clean and dry.

I would also keep her warm, as you are doing, and in a quiet, darkened room.

To slow down further egg production, I would feed her on just weetabix and water for a few days, so give her innards a chance to settle down.

I would also give her a calcium supplement. This will strenghthen the muscular contractions which shove the eggs along the laying tackle, and firm up the shells too.

You can get liquid calcium supplements of 'tinternet (Zolcal D is a good one) or limestone flour, as sold for reptiles, (ebay) and at equestrian shops. If you use this, add a few drops of cod liver oil to her food, to assist in its absorption.

If the vent continues to stay 'inside out', you could try to push it back in gently, with a gloved finger and some lubricating gel.

I fit is very swollen, some haemorrhoid cream may help shrink it.

Good luck.
