midgie Posted September 21, 2009 Share Posted September 21, 2009 A breeder I just bought 2 new girls from has suggested I use Crovect twice a year as a preventative treatment for mites, lice etc. I know this med. is usually meant for sheep, and isn't licensed for poultry, but understand that some chicken owners on this forum use similar stuff successfully. Anyone tried Crovect, or if not, can recommend another brand? I've tried searching the forum archives for info but don't know what I'm looking for! The hen breeder, (who seems to have a great reputation for healthy birds, on this forum and locally), told me that he buys Crovect from his local agricultural supplier; he gets small-ish jars there, reckoned they cost around £20 and lasted forever. He dabs it on to his hens necks and tails twice a year with a little paintbrush, and, apparently, get really good results. He told me I'd need to tell the shop I 'had a few jacobs' I was a wee bit apprehensive about his advice, though, as he also told me the way to cure chicken-sniffles is to put Milton sterilising tablets in their drinking water Never heard that one before...? It's legal classification is a POM-VPS which means that it can only be supplied by a vet, pharmacist or suitably qualified person all of which should not legally supply Crovect for use in chickens. "For the treatment and control of ticks, headflies and biting lice on sheep. For the prevention and treatment of blowfly strike on sheep.......do not adminsiter to animals of less than 12.5kg bodyweight.....Not to be administered to animals producing milk for human consumption..." If it can't be used for milk producting animals I certainly wouldn't like to eat eggs from chickens receiving treatment and the weight of a chicken would also make safe dosage calculations dodgy.
